After Tim Schafer, the leader of Double Fine, suggested that the initial budget for a potential Psychonauts 2 could reach 13 million dollars (about 9.8 million Euro) Markus Persson, aka Notch, has said that the amount of money needed for the development process might be three times that.

Writing on his Tumblr, Notch said, “Here are the facts of what’s happening now, from my perspective: Tim and I haven’t spoken much at all other than a couple of emails. The budget for doing a Psychonauts 2 is three times higher than my initial impression. I have no idea if this is actually going to happen.”

He added, “A couple of other parties have mentioned also being interested in investing in it. I would not be investing in this as a charity. It would be because I think the game would be profitable. And naturally, I wouldn’t want to have any creative input in the game. It would be purely a high risk investment in a project I believe in.”

Persson says that the sum of money needed for Psychonauts 2 means that the involved parties will have to talk a lot more and listen to their advisors before making any sort of final decision.

The indie developer believes that the fan base of the first game should downgrade the level of hype over the potential Notch – Schafer collaboration because it puts a lot of pressure on the two developers to create something rather than allow the opportunity to slide and let the fans down.

At the moment Double Fine is involved with the creation of the classic adventure game that they have financed using Kickstarter, although it does not currently have a name or a launch date.

Notch is working on his upcoming Scrolls, a mix between strategy, role-playing and card-based game.
