Apple keeps tabs on the banks that play ball

Apple Pay, the contactless payment service launched by Apple in September, is gaining more and more adopters not only in the customer ranks, but also among banks and retailers.

The Cupertino, California-based technology behemoth is keeping close tabs on participating partners, and that includes banks and stores. Just this week Apple added a new name to the list of supported banks.

Apple Pay participating issuers

A timely updated table holding the names of the participating banks and the types of cards they support for Apple Pay can be found at HT6288, a support document like any other on Apple’s website. Commerce Bank is the latest addition to that growing list of issuers, but Apple notes that these guys support MasterCard only.

Other notable names on that list include America First Credit Union, American Express, Bank of America, Barclaycard, Capital One, Chase, Citi, J.P. Morgan, M&T Bank, Merrill Lynch, Navy Federal Credit Union, PNC, Regions Bank, SunTrust, U.S Bank, U.S. Trust, USAA, and Wells Fargo.

Supported cards vary by bank, and include personal credit cards, personal debit cards, co-branded cards (Airline, hotel, retail, rewards), small business cards, prepaid cards, and corporate cards.

According to the California tech giant, “Apple Pay works with most of the major credit and debit cards from the top U.S. banks. Just add your participating cards and continue to get all the rewards, benefits, and security of your cards. We're working with more banks to support Apple Pay.”

Users simply add their card to Passbook on their NFC-capable iDevice and they’re good to go. Apple Watch will also be supported.

Growing list of supported stores

At the time Apple Pay debuted, the service already had the support of dozens of high-profile retailers, including Aéropostale, American Eagle Outfitters, Babies”R”Us, BJ’s Wholesale Club, Bloomingdale’s, Champs Sports, Chevron and Texaco retail stores, and countless others, in addition to the 262 Apple retail stores across The States.

Additionally, there are numerous apps that offer the ability to use Apple Pay to buy stuff with a single tap, including Apple’s very own Store app, Chairish, Fancy, Groupon, HotelTonight, Houzz, Uber, OpenTable, Panera Bread, Spring, Staples, and more.

Apple also said in its October 16 announcement that payment and terminal suppliers like Adyen, Bank of America Merchant Services, Braintree, NCR, and Stripe were “working to bring merchants in stores and in apps the ability to easily, securely and privately accept payments using Apple Pay.”

Unfortunately, there’s no timely updated chart other than for banks, but don’t worry. Everyone tends to scream it from the top of their lungs when they add support.
