Developer Psyonix and publisher Square Enix have announced that the closed beta for the upcoming multiplayer action game Nosgoth will be commencing on February 27.

Nosgoth is a free-to-play third-person online multiplayer game focusing on team fights and offering lightning-fast action and highly competitive gameplay, set in the Legacy of Kain universe and mainly dealing with the conflict between man and vampires.

The closed beta phase of Nosgoth will also see the introduction of the new Siege Mode, available from day one. The new mode has the Humans capture and guard certain key locations against intrusion, while the bloodthirsty Vampires will do all within their power to hunt down their frail opponents.

The Siege mode is another exciting addition to the game's asymmetrical melee versus ranged Team Deathmatch mode that already defines and sets Nosgoth's gameplay apart from similar titles.

The developers plan to add numerous new features throughout the closed beta, future content including new maps and modes, as well as character classes, new weapons, abilities and skins.

Furthermore, the transition into closed beta will also see the opening of the in-game store, and players will be able to earn gold as well as purchase Rune Stones with real money, and purchase various in-game items.

Nosgoth has been developed with a fair and balanced gameplay in mind, and players can customize their classes and choose abilities that suite their own individual gameplay style. Although it does feature in-game transactions, it will never be a pay to win game, as the developers assured, because all the purchasable items will only constitute "sidegrades," not direct upgrades to existing ones.

The game thus pits players against each other in a competition based purely on skill, eliminating the gear imbalance differences found in many traditional multiplayer titles, and especially in free-to-play ones.

The official announcement on the Nosgoth blog also features a small video during which Design Director Corey Davis offers a sneak peek at the new Vampire Clans skins that have been in development in conjunction with the original Soul Reaver's Art Lead, Daniel Cabuco, in order to deliver a more authentic visual experience, as the man himself puts it:

"It's with great pleasure that I announce my involvement with Psyonix in creating these classic Soul Reaver clan skins. They heard the fans and sought me out to ensure an authentic tie to the original series."

Until the beta goes live on Thursday, the team has scheduled a special live gameplay streaming session that can be watched on Nosgoth's Twitch channel today, Wednesday February 26, starting at 10 PM GMT.
