Security giant Symantec has released a free security solution for Android that features anti-malware and anti-theft technologies.

Called Norton Mobile Security Lite, the new offering automatically scans all files and app updates for malware and allows users to remotely lock their devices by sending text messages to them.

The application features automatic updates which is a must for any antivirus product and allows users to stay protected from the latest threats.

The remote locking feature is not only useful when a device is stolen, but it can also help users secure their sensitive data when they lose their smartphone.

As the name implies, Norton Mobile Security Lite is a lighter version of Norton Mobile Security, a commercial product that also features remote location, remote wiping, call blocking and web protection.

Those are all important components, especially the last one. According to a recent report from mobile security vendor Lookout, Android users are two and a half more likely to encounter malware now then they were six months ago, with 30% of them likely to encounter web-based threats.

When it comes to phone loss the stats aren't any better. According to survey carried out by Symantec earlier this year, as much as 36 percent of U.S. consumers have lost their mobile phone at least once.

"In the same day, a smartphone user can stream their favorite music station, get the high score hurling birds through the air and then file their taxes online. Having Norton installed means feeling equally confident regardless of what you do on your mobile phone," said Dave Cole, vice president mobile products, Norton.

Even so, Symantec is kind of late to the free Android security landscape. Other players like Lookout, AVG or BitDefender have already had a significant head start to capture the market.
