Nortel announced that it is providing Golden Telecom, a Russian operator of telecommunications services, with a solution for conducting a mobile WiMAX field trial in Moscow based on Nortel 4G technology. The Moscow trial is part of Golden Telecom's strategy to satisfy the growing demand for Internet access and fast mobile communications services such as VoIP, email
and multimedia applications.

"Mobile WiMAX is at the forefront of next-generation mobility," said Sorin Lupu, president Eastern Europe, Nortel. "Advanced OFDM-MIMO will be the foundation for all future wireless technologies and - in a short number of years - I'm sure we'll find that all computers, PDAs and other mobile consumer devices will be wireless-enabled. In the short term, Golden Telecom's mobile WiMAX trial is a significant step towards providing Moscow's citizens with 'always on' communications available when and where they want them, through whatever device."

Mobile WiMAX is an efficient solution for metropolitan areas such as Moscow where the population density of more than 9,000 per square kilometer makes it cost-efficient to install WiMAX base stations and equipment where each base station can handle hundreds, even thousands of users.

Mobile WiMAX is currently defined by WiMAX Forum in the 1.5, 2.3, 2.5, and 3.5GHz frequency band profiles and can deliver speeds of 1-10 Mbps and higher. The Nortel - Golden Telecom trial will provide a connection speed range between 1 Mbps and 25 Mbps for each user.
