The hack is still in its early stages, but a ROM is in the works

Barnes & Noble might be doing everything that stands in its power to limit the number of applications that you can run on your Nook Tablet, but hackers will always find a way to run their software on the device if they want to.

That’s also the case with a member of the XDA Developers community (thanks to engadget for spotting this) who has managed to find a way to run Ubuntu Lite on B&N’s 7-incher.

The hack is pretty much in its starting stages as it can only be run through a VNC server, but it does work and the video enclosed above proves it.

More importantly, the developer believes that even though he hasn’t managed to find it, there must be a way to crash the underlining Android kernel and turn this into a ROM.

We’ll have to wait and see how things evolve, but Ubuntu may soon be heading to a Nook near you.
