The famous frontman for The Neptunes and N.E.R.D, the hit maker music producer that propelled names like Britney Spears, Jay Z, Justin Timberlake and Usher to universal success, decided to launch an (unasked for) solo album.
The 'In My Mind' material barely hit the shelves and critics are already blaming the exorbitant artist for making such a poor record. In his own words, the album is a small thing, meant not to distract too much attention and reserved exclusively for the 'thinkers'.
And yet, such thinkers will surely be disappointed by the fact that very little stress is put on the actual lyrics of the songs and all the attention is diverted to the cameos from big names as Kanye West, Jay Z and Gwen Stefani. Pharrell isn't too shy, either, about burrowing the jazzy-rap sound that is particular to the Neptunes and using it for at least five of his own tracks.

But that's not the worst part, as it is only normal for an artist to be influenced by his previous work. What's more shocking is the fact that, although this is meant to be a solo album that would eventually reveal the man inside The Neptunes and N.E.R.D frontman, it does no such thing.
Even more, it comes off as a musical 'sequel' of Pharrell's career until now, as an extension of the previous work done by the already mentioned bands. And, still, it's not half as bad as other products on the market. But it is a shame that a man who is obviously doing better when not solo should spend his time recording such lame albums as this is.
No matter what the critics say, 'In My Mind' misses something. It could be inspired songwriting, or more beats or real emotion that are lacking from the new album. Or, maybe it's just a matter of taste... ours or Pharrell's.
