Games will still dominate, though

The PlayStation Portable is a very successful handheld console, boasting over 50 million units sold worldwide. Not all of them were generated by the fact that people wanted to play titles while they were on the move, though, as the device's multimedia capabilities, despite its somewhat clunky size, made it ideal for other people who weren't that much into gaming.

Now, with the PSP Go! announced and scheduled to ship this fall, this more casual audience will have a lot of features made for them and the reduction in the size of the device will make it even more attractive. But, while it will be a gaming console in the first place, non-gaming applications are very encouraged by Sony, as the company's Al De Leon has revealed to Cnet.

He says that the reduction in the price of development tools will allow a lot of interesting things to appear for the device. “One thing we did announce at E3 was a significant reduction in the price of development tools for PSP. The goal with that is to enable all sorts of developers to be able to develop content for the PSP. It will be mostly games, but there's certainly an opportunity to look at some non-gaming applications.”

It's certainly nice to see that Sony has a much broader look on what people need these days, as the trend to make an all-encompassing device is getting very strong. With the PSP Go! allowing to play high-quality titles but also other applications, it will certainly become quite popular, especially with gadget fans around the world.

Will you buy the PSP Go! for its gaming capabilities, or is the multimedia support something that peaks your interest? Support your decision by leaving a comment below.
