According to the latest data that IDC has released on the smartphone market, Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia is enjoying a market share of around 5 percent in India.

India is considered an emerging market when it comes to smartphones, but it has seen an impressive growth in shipments over the last year. 12.8 million devices have been shipped in the country in Q3 this year, marking an increase of 229 percent YOY.

The number also shows an increase of 28 percent in shipments when compared to the second quarter of the year. 23 percent of the smartphones were devices with screens of 5 – 6 inches.

“The growth in the smartphone market continues to drive the overall growth numbers for the phone market – given that there's still a huge potential for smartphone penetration in India, this trend is expected to continue in the coming quarters,” said Manasi Yadav, senior market analyst with IDC India.

The research firm also shows that Nokia has managed to sell around 640,000 handsets in the country in the timeframe, maintaining its market share at the same 5 percent level as before.

Nokia’s Windows Phone smartphones account for around 90 percent of all Windows Phone shipments worldwide, with the Nokia Lumia 520 being the most popular device in the segment. Nearly 50 percent of Windows Phone handsets in India are Lumia 520 devices.

“The Lumia range of devices continued to show a growth trajectory in 3Q2013 and garnered close to 5% market share – the trend is expected to continue with greater support from Microsoft in the coming quarters,” IDC notes.

“The third quarter of 2013 saw a few notable launches like the Lumia 625 and Lumia 925 which have been able to generate positive interest from consumers and developers alike.”

At the moment, the Finnish mobile phone maker is placed fourth on the smartphone market in India, with Samsung leading the pack, followed by Micromax and Karbonn. Lava is placed fifth at the moment.
