Soon, more high-end smartphones out there will be able to provide users with the Optical Image Stabilization features that Nokia’s Lumia handsets include, it seems.

Apparently, the company has had an exclusivity deal on the ST Microelectronics L2G2IS two-axis gyro that powers the cameras in handsets such as Lumia 920, 925, 1020, and 1520, but the agreement has expired, and more vendors are expected to adopt the feature, The Register reports.

The feature won’t come in cheap at all, as each chip with the aforementioned gyro costs $1.7 per unit (bulk), but the end result will certainly appeal a lot to users, which should make it worth the trouble.

The inclusion of this technology inside smartphones means that users will get longer exposure times in low-light scenarios, steadier videos, less blur, and more, as PhoneArena notes.
