Nokia, the world's most important cell phone manufacturer, has chosen in a very strategic manner the moment to launch its new phones. The company has presented its offer in Singapore, one day before the CommunicAsia, the region's largest IT and communications fair. This initiative has the purpose to fight back the increasing influence of the local manufacturers, especially the Korean giant Samsung.

Thus, 7 new models have stepped into the spotlight, amongst which the 6280 3G sliding phone, fitted with a 2-megapixel digital camera, the 6270 quadband, also carrying a 2-megapixel digital camera, as well as the 6111 model.

But perhaps the most important models to have been launched on this occasion were the ones using CDMA technology, the second major standard for mobile telephony after GSM. Amongst these models, we mention the high-end 6265 sliding phone, and the entry-level 2255 clamshell mode, as well as the 2125.

These CDMA models are the centerpiece of Nokia's strategy to grow on the markets where this technology is used on a large scale, generally in Asia Pacific and China, as stated by Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, Nokia's executive vice-president and general manager for mobile phones: "The growth prospects on the CDMA front are extremely encouraging. The CDMA market is expected to grow at pace with the overall handset market and the global CDMA handset volume is expected to increase by 10 to 15 percent year-on-year in 2005".

With these models, Nokia is able to almost completely fill its gaps in the general offer, especially with respect to the mid-segment phones, fitted with digital cameras, gaps that caused the company to a decrease of the Finish company's market share last year.
