A mobile operating system that will never arrive on the market

Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia has been rumored before to be working on a new mobile operating system, after killing off two of them in the past couple of years, namely Symbian and MeeGo, one that would sport the name of Meltemi, and which has yet to be officially confirmed.

The platform, however, has already been canceled, most probably due to Nokia’s focus on building Lumia handsets running under Windows Phone, and Asha devices that are powered by the S40 software.

However, a leaked document that emerged over at MyNokiaBlog appears meant to provide a better look at the features that could have been included in Meltemi should the OS be still alive.

Apparently, Nokia actually planned at some point to push to shelves handsets running under Meltemi alongside Windows Phone and Asha devices, but changed its mind afterwards, and decided to go for a simple approach, with only two OSes loaded on its devices.

Furthermore, it seems that some of the features that had been planned for Meltemi were actually included in Asha handsets, which might explain a bit why the company chose to send the OS into oblivion.

Nokia features such as Maps and Music – present in both Lumia and Asha phones – were set to make it inside the OS too, along with smartphone capabilities such as video calling, cloud storage, ClearBlack Displays, Carl Zeiss camera lenses, Xpress browser, Journal, Gaming apps and more.

Furthermore, the OS was supposedly set to offer “social integration” to its users, although specific info on how deep that integration would go was not provided.

Overall, however, it’s quite clear that Meltemi was meant to be loaded on devices supposedly set to stand between Lumia and Asha handsets, packing features and capabilities common with them.

Of course, with Lumia handsets available for lower and lower price tags and with Asha phones packing many of the planned features for Meltemi, it doesn’t come as a surprise that Nokia chose to simplify things are adopt only a dual-OS approach.
