Existing smartphones are only beta tests, a real handset is coming soon

At the end of this week, Nokia’s first Windows Phone-powered LTE-capable handset will arrive on shelves at AT&T in the United States, namely Lumia 900.

The handset has already seen a lot of hype, since it is the new flagship Windows Phone from Nokia, and is expected to benefit from an impressive marketing campaign from Nokia, AT&T and Microsoft.

In fact, the marketing machine was said to have been already fired up through the delivery of free Lumia 900 devices to AT&T’s sales representatives.

Today, we learn that Nokia’s advertising campaign for this device will also involve a newly launched website, called “Smartphone Beta Test.”

The website does not make direct reference to either Nokia or the Lumia 900 handset, but the colors and overall design of the page point at Finnish vendor’s "Amazing Everyday" marketing for Lumia series.

Moreover, the source code for the web page makes reference to Nokia.com, which is the proof that was needed to link the two.

The website features a countdown that expires on April 6th and a video of a man sitting in a chair, waiting for the counter to reach 0.

There are also three videos embedded (they can be seen at the bottom of this article as well), showing people discussing features of existing phones.

The three videos focus on the durability of smartphones, death grip, and screen visibility when outdoors. Clearly, Nokia wants to suggest that its upcoming Nokia Lumia 900 will be able to deliver them all, while rival solutions won’t.

Existing smartphones were released only as part of a global beta test program, the first video below suggests. A phone to rectify that is about to arrive.

These video ads remind us of the marketing campaign that Verizon and Motorola ran a few years ago for the Motorola DROID. Their clips were meant to hurt the iPhone, featuring the tag line “Everything iDon’t, DROID Does.”

Most probably, Nokia will start airing these ads on TV on April 6th , or will unveil more on its ad campaign for the Lumia 900, so stay tuned for more.
