Today, Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia announced the signing of a patent licensing agreement with Canadian handset vendor Research In Motion.

As part of this agreement, RIM will receive access to Nokia’s patents for a one-time payment and ongoing payments. However, no specific info on the terms of the deal has been provided.

The deal will put an end to all existing patent litigation between the two companies and will also result in the withdrawal of pending actions in the US, UK and Canada, the two companies announced.

“We are very pleased to have resolved our patent licensing issues with RIM and reached this new agreement, while maintaining Nokia's ability to protect our unique product differentiation,” said Paul Melin, chief intellectual property officer at Nokia.

“This agreement demonstrates Nokia's industry leading patent portfolio and enables us to focus on further licensing opportunities in the mobile communications market.”
