Nokia and ATI Technologies have announced a partnership whose aim is to enhance the multimedia experiences on mobile phones. The companies will work together to provide high quality music playback, video, mobile TV and 3D gaming to Nokia customers. With the increasing complexity found in recent phones, Nokia and ATI have decided to promote open standards and provide integrated hardware, software and tools for making the application development easier. This will ensure that future applications will be compatible with a wide range of devices. ATI plans to offer developers dedicated tools and software development kits by the fall of 2006. Also, Nokia and ATI will hold a series of joint workshops to familiarize developers with the new development environment in the second half of the year.

"Our role is to enable all content, from ultra-high quality music playback to 3D gaming, and we'll jointly guide and support the members of the content development community as they focus on creating amazing user experiences," stated Paul Dal Santo, Vice President and GM, Handheld Products, ATI. "With a shared vision of how multimedia impacts the mobile market, Nokia and ATI are providing much needed direction and a framework to move the whole industry forward."

Nokia believes that it will take between 12 and 18 months to develop its next generation handsets and for developers to create the needed software applications.
