Nokia has just announced on its official blog that it has updated Ovi Maps beta to version 3.06. Based on the users' feedback, Nokia's development team has released an updated beta version of the software which includes lots of enhancements, as well as several new features.

Compared to the previous 3.04 version, Ovi Maps beta 3.06 contains major improvements such as:

- The option to download street maps directly to the device: a new feature called “Update” on the main menu which allows users to download Street Maps directly (via WiFi) to the phone without a PC;

- My Position and Search features are now integrated and when they're accessed, they will show the user's last map view;

- Added the Back button in Favorites;

- Add long tap functionality to delete and rename collections and routes;

- Included a pop-up when the application is used for the first time to inform the user to download new map data (when upgrading from 3.04 to 3.06 for the first time);

- Improved behaviors of transit lines settings in map toolbox (no more grey out);

- Compass calibration hint;

- Refreshed place details information view.

Even though it's still a beta version, users who installed the updated beta version of Ovi Maps report that it is pretty stable and that the GPS lock and route calculations are much faster.

However, several bugs still plague the software and new ones were also found. Compass problems when the application is used on Nokia N8 have been mentioned, as well as issues with the accelerometer sensor, which does not work correctly.

Another significant problem comes from the fact that users won't be able to pan around a planned route when viewing it. Even if zooming in and/or out is possible, one still needs to be able to see the route in context, and thus comes the need for panning.

Nokia Ovi Maps beta 3.06 is now available for download from Softpedia.
