Updated Java Runtime 2.0 for S60 and Nokia Braille Reader unleashed from the Nokia Beta Labs

Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia has just come up with two novelties for its users. The first one is an updated Java Runtime 2.0 for S60, which includes a series of bug fixes, as well as changes to the conversion functionality, while the other one would be the launch of a Braille Reader, aimed at those who are visually impaired.

The updated Java Runtime 2.0 for S60, which has just been released from the Nokia Beta Labs, comes around with the aforementioned fixes, which, the company says, are aimed at avoiding situations when the device’s C- drive gets full. There are also a series of small changes included with the update, such as those affecting the eSWT widgets, changes to Bluetooth, as well as less debug logging, which is expected to result in some minor performance improvements.

The list of fixes that the update comes with includes said changes to conversion, so as to avoid situations where disk space would drop below critical level; MIDlets get converted to internal mass storage if possible; while MIDlet with large RMS can be started; MIDlets can access memory card root folder and support all Nokia specific JAD attributes.

On the other hand, there are also a series of known issues that should be taken into consideration: Phone may become slow or unresponsive if it runs out of disk space on C-drive. Please ensure that C-drive will have at least 10MB of free disk space before installation. SSL connection does not work in all phones Nokia 5800 firmware version needs to be at least V21.0.017 Backup and restore does not work for MIDlets on memory card Nokia specific globalindicators extension API is not supported Please re-boot your device after installing the new version of JRT As for the Nokia Braille Reader, here's what the Nokia Beta Labs say about it: “our new Nokia Braille Reader application gives SMS for the blind and visually impaired. It captures received SMS messages and brings them to the foreground for reading using Braille and tactile feedback. The application was concepted together with actual users and researchers focusing on the topic, and we are now happy to show the first experimental version of the concept.” Watch the video below for a few more details on the application.
