A few days ago, Viber made available for download a new flavor of its Windows Phone 8 application, one that provides users with the possibility to call phones and landlines, courtesy of a brand-new feature called Viber Out, and Nokia is now teasing it for its Lumia devices.

Viber is already one of the most popular applications on Microsoft’s mobile operating system, yet the aforementioned new feature, packed inside Viber 4.1.0.0, made things even more appealing.

Other features and enhancements have been included in that update as well, but Viber Out is the one expected to catch most attention from users.

“It’s already one of the most-used messaging apps on the Windows Phone platform, but the Viber 4.1 update for Nokia Lumia devices running Windows Phone 8 adds a raft of new features to widen your chatting potential,” a recent post on Nokia Conversations reads.

“In our eyes, the most powerful upgrade is ‘Viber Out,’ which permits you to call mobile and landline numbers at rates usually a lot lower than what your network operator would charge.”

Owners of Windows Phone 8-based Lumia devices out there interested in taking advantage of the feature will need to connect to the web for that, either over a Wi-Fi network or using their carrier’s 3G service.

As one can easily imagine, it is actually recommended to connect via Wi-Fi, so as to avoid any unwanted charges when using a data connection.

However, users will also need upfront credit in order to make Viber Out calls. Those who would like to learn more on call costs can do so from within the application itself, through going to Settings > Viber Out > Get Rates.

A detailed list of call costs can be found on this page on Viber’s website. What users should keep in mind is that these refer only to calls made to phones and landlines, whereas those made to other Viber users remain free, as they were before.

In addition to Viber Out, the popular chatting application will also provide users with the possibility to easily send video messages to their friends. Moreover, they can also send multiple photos at the same time and can also enjoy hands-free Bluetooth connectivity.

As said blog post notes, this small update to Viber should make a lot of difference when it comes to the experience that users enjoy on their devices.

You can download Viber 4.1 for Windows Phone 8 from Softpedia today. The app is available on all handsets running under the platform, including Lumia phones.
