A new application is now available for download in the Nokia Store in a stable flavor, following its availability as a beta flavor for the past several months, namely the Nokia Sleeping Screen.

The new application was designed to offer users the possibility to add photos or artwork to the lock screen of their devices when it is in sleep mode.

Thus, the otherwise black screen will appear to be alive, either by displaying beautiful pictures or by offering useful notifications to users.

This decorative application has also been designed so as to eat as little power as possible, and functions as some sort of a screen saver, although it is much more that that.

Here's what Tuomas Tammi from the Sleeping Screen team notes in a post on the Nokia Beta Labs blog:

Sleeping Screen is the product of a project at Nokia Research Center. It began as an exploration into low-power technologies for "always-on display" applications.

After a while the team decided that the best way to validate the technology and get user feedback is to build a customizable low-power screen saver application for Nokia smartphones equipped with OLED displays.

In the end we were able to show that, in addition to being desirable from the user perspective, always-on screen savers are also feasible in terms of power management.

The Nokia Sleeping Screen is being offered for download via the Nokia Store, where users will find it available as an add-on application.

The new mobile software has been around for about six months now, and it received encouraging feedback from those who installed and used it. It is expected to appeal to even more users, especially now that it is available in the Nokia Store.

“We really appreciate all the reviews, bug reports and comments that that you have made. It's very rewarding to work with such an enthusiastic community. Thank you,” Tuomas Tammi continues.
