Russian carrier MegaFon has just announced that it has signed an agreement with Nokia Siemens Networks to upgrade its mobile broadband services.

Known as the General Partner of the XXII Winter Olympic Games and XI Paralympic Games in 2014 in Sochi, MegaFon is owned by AF Telecom Holding group, the TeliaSonera group and Altimo telecommunications holding, as of June 30, 2010.

MegaFon has also entered the market of fixed-line communication for government and corporate customers as well as fixed broadband market, during the same month.

The carrier has appointed Nokia Siemens Networks to build its IP mobile backhaul network to reduce costs across the country, and to increase network's capacity, as well as “to ensure smooth migration from legacy technology to an all-IP transport platform.”

We aim to build a unified mobile backhaul to facilitate faster rollout of 3G services such as HSPA and prepare a converged IP transport network for fixed and mobile services for millions of people in Russia,” said Valery Ermakov, first deputy to general director for operations, OJSC MegaFon.

Nokia Siemens Networks’ expertise in system integration, coupled with the best and highly scalable equipment from Tellabs and complemented by Juniper Networks, will enable us to build a cost-efficient, LTE-ready network.”

With the new solution offered by Nokia Siemens Networks, MegaFon will be able to deliver competitive mobile broadband services and enable universal access to network resources for both fixed and mobile users.

In addition to Nokia Siemens Networks' smart mobile backhaul solution, the company will also offer the carriers a range of professional services such as network design, project management, implementation and care over a period of two years.

The services offered include the integration of Tellabs 8600 Managed Edge System, the Tellabs 8800 Multiservice Router Series and the Tellabs 8000 Intelligent Network Manager, along with Juniper Networks MX Series 3D Universal Edge Routers and EX Series Ethernet Switches.
