Infrastructure solutions provider Nokia Siemens Networks and South Korean leading mobile phone maker Samsung Electronics have been recently announced as being the winners of Juniper Research’s 2010 Future Mobile Green Awards. According to the research firm, Nokia Siemens Networks received the Gold Award in the Green Infrastructure category, courtesy of its Flexi Multiradio Base Station. At the same time, Juniper Research also added that Samsung was awarded gold in the Green Handset category, due to the launch of its Blue Earth device.

The Nokia Siemens Networks Flexi series was recognized as being capable of delivering both adaptability and great power consumption reductions. “We are very pleased with this recognition. The Nokia Siemens Networks Flexi Multiradio Base Station is the industry smallest, most energy-efficient multi-standard base station and shows Nokia Siemens Networks' commitment to environmental sustainability,” says Tommi Uitto, head of Wireless Access Product Management, Nokia Siemens Networks, “Flexi Multiradio Base Station supports 2G, 3G, and is LTE ready with a software upgrade only, highlighting our focus on commercial LTE hardware and software to meet the needs of commercial deployments worldwide”.

According to Juniper Research’s recently published Mobile Green report, the carbon footprint from the use of handsets back in 2008 was of more than 30Mt, and base stations accounted for around 70 percent of the total amount. Even so, the report shows that mobile industry players are continuously looking for means to address this issue and that companies have started to deploy feederless sites, as well as to implement off-grid generators that make use of renewable energy, in a move aimed at reducing the carbon footprint.

Tony Crabtree, managing director at Juniper Research said that, “Juniper founded these awards in order to give recognition to those companies in the mobile industry that we believe are making a significant contribution to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, and which have encouraged the promotion of environmentally sustainable business practices.” Juniper Research also announced that its ‘Green Mobile Handsets & Applications: Strategies , Scenarios & Forecasts 2009-2014’ and ‘Green Mobile Networks & Base Stations: Strategies , Scenarios & Forecasts 2009-2014’ reports can be downloaded for free from its website.
