Celcom, a leading Malaysian mobile operator, has contracted Nokia Siemens Networks in order to expand and modernize its current 3G nationwide network. Incorporating the high-end HSPA technology of Nokia Siemens, the future 3G network of Celcom will allow users to benefit from new services, while the already existing ones will be better and faster than ever.

With Nokia Siemens Network's Flexi based stations, the upgrading of Celcom's 3G network will be a quick one, enabling a cost-effective and power-saving deployment. The modernized network will have an enhanced capacity and functionality and the new services that can be offered will come to satisfy the continuously growing needs of end users.

Talking about the new deal with Celcom, JP Takala, Head of Customer Team at Nokia Siemens Networks, declared: "Nokia Siemens Networks is proud that Celcom has placed its trust in our solutions for an important project. There is a growing awareness in the market that solutions are reliable, cost-effective and offer operators the ability to address their customers' needs, both now and in the future."

Although it's the oldest mobile operator in Malaysia, Celcom is only the second one in terms of subscriber number, having slightly over 7.2 million users. The first place is taken by Maxis, which managed to attract more than 8 million customers. Even so, Celcom offers the widest mobile coverage area, both on GSM and on 3G frequencies. The new collaboration with Nokia Siemens will surely enable Celcom to further offer high-quality services to its subscribers and consolidate its leading position on the Malaysian mobile market.

Malaysia currently has about 22 million mobile subscribers and three major carriers (the already mentioned Celcom and Maxis, plus DiGi, which has almost the same number of users as Celcom), hence it's quite a competitive market.
