Nokia announced it managed to ship the millionth 5800 XpressMusic handset, an achievement that comes along with the recent launch of the device in the UK market. The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, the latest addition to the company’s lineup of XpressMusic handsets, represents the first touchscreen device it released on the mass market.

"The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic has been received very positively and this milestone is just further proof that people all over the world want a device that is not only a great music experience, but also makes the most of touch screen technology," said Jo Harlow, vice president, Nokia.

The handset has been launched back in October, and it has since seen positive results on all markets it has reached. According to the company, the 5800 XpressMusic had successful starts in several areas, including Hong Kong and Moscow where it sold out in the first hours following its launch. As the device launched in UK, many users queued outside the company's Flagship Store on London's Regent Street to grab the handset.

Moreover, Olli Pekka Kallasvuo, Nokia's CEO, announced during a conference call that the phone sold in over half a million units during the last 30 days of 2008. The interesting part is that the 5800 XpressMusic was then available only in a few markets around the world.

“Nokia 5800 XpressMusic shipped slightly more than 0.5 million units in the last 30 days of Q4,” while “the response to this device and our new touch use interface has been beyond our expectations,” he said. He also added that the company “will continue an aggressive roll out and marketing plan throughout the first quarter,” and that, “the Nokia 5800 has the potential to become our highest revenue and gross margin generating device in a fairly short order.”

The handset is meant to deliver leveraged music experience to users as it comes with a range of music and entertainment essentials, such as a graphic equalizer, 8GB of memory storage for up to 6000 tracks, support for all main digital music formats, as well as a 3.5mm jack. In addition, the device also comes with built-in surround sound stereo speakers able to deliver impressively-powerful sound.

The capabilities of the phone do not end with its music functionality. It also sports a 3.2" widescreen display, which delivers a 16 by 9 aspect ratio and 30 frames-per-second playback and recording. A 3.2-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens is also present, as well as image and video sharing features for Share on Ovi, Flickr, or Facebook.
