Today, Nokia announced the immediate availability of a new application for its Windows Phone-based Lumia devices, namely Nokia Reading.

The application is backed by a service meant to serve “the written word” to Lumia owners, making reading on-the-go both convenient and visually attractive.

The launch of Nokia Reading is yet another step that the Finnish handset vendor is taking towards ensuring that its devices indeed offer the differentiation it has been long touting.

Starting with this week, the application arrives on Nokia Lumia 900, Lumia 800, Lumia 710, and Lumia 610 devices on a country-by-country basis.

Initially, the application will become available in countries such as France, Germany, Italy, Russia, Spain and the UK. Users in more markets will receive the application before the year’s end.

Nokia Reading will pop-up in the Nokia Collection in Microsoft’s Windows Phone Marketplace over the course of the next few weeks.

“The initial version of the service focuses on making it easy for you to find, buy and – most importantly – read a book in your own language,” a post on Nokia Conversation reads.

“Nokia Reading boasts a wide range of local titles, as well as a large collection of English titles popular across the world, such as The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo; One Day; and The Adventures Of Sherlock Holmes, with more being added all the time.”

The service will provide users with the possibility to access thousands of international classics that have been made available for free.

“To make it easy to choose what to read, books are organised into lists such as Top eBooks and New Releases and categorized into genres. If you already know what you want, full predictive search makes it easy to find what you want by title or author,” Nokia notes.

Nokia also notes that Nokia Reading is meant to provide access to e-books to more users around the world. Moreover, it underlines one of the most important features of the application: the serving of e-reading content in local language.

The ClearBlack Display packed on Nokia’s Lumia smartphones will make reading easier than on other devices. Moreover, the app comes with a night mode as well, so that users won’t be blinded by the screen.

Although just released, Nokia Reading is already expecting updates and enhancements in the near future. Some of these include provision for audio books and News Stream (offering a virtual news magazine, so that users could easily subscribe to RSS feeds). Various customizations are also planned.
