A handy application designed for the visually impaired

Nokia has a lot of highly appealing, exclusive applications available for download for the owners of Windows Phone-based Lumia devices out there, and a new one is now available for them, specifically designed for the visually impaired, namely Nokia Pocket Magnifier.

Windows Phone 8 already arrives on devices with a variety of Ease of Access features packed inside, yet they do not cover all that users need from their devices, and the aforementioned new application is meant to fill that gap.

For example, there are screen magnifier, text size adjustment, and high contrast options available in the operating system, yet they are focused only on what’s on the phone’s screen, whereas people often need help with things that are outside the screen.

“Nokia Pocket Magnifier is there to assist people with poor eyesight when it comes to anything external; reading books, posters and public transport timetables, for example,” a recent post on Nokia Conversations explains.

The application was designed to take advantage of the camera inside Windows Phone 8 devices, so as to zoom into text when the user pinches fingers on the screen.

Moreover, said blog post explains that, while the traditional black ink on white paper might prove to be too bright for some people, Nokia Pocket Magnifier also includes a series of filters that are meant to help users when it comes to reading such text.

According to Nokia, said filters will also reduce eyestrain in the process, yet another reason to download the company’s application and give it a try.

“You can instead, and cleverly, swap the black for white and white for black. Or, if you find it easier to read yellow, or blue, there are a variety of others colors to choose from,” Nokia explains.

At the same time, the mobile application arrives on devices with a pause screen feature, which will allow users to freeze the display to show only what’s in the view at a specific time.

Thus, text should prove easier to read, not to mention that users will be able to snap a screenshot of the display and save it to the gallery for later view.

On top of that, the Nokia Pocket Magnifier comes with a handy flashlight, which can prove a great feature at times when there is limited light.

For those who haven’t gotten the chance to try the application until now, we should note that it was developed in collaboration with Royal National Institute of Blind people (RNIB).

You can download Nokia Pocket Magnifier from Softpedia today. The application is available only for Nokia Lumia devices.
