Espoo, Finland-based mobile phone maker Nokia has just announced that users of its Nokia N900 Maemo-based handset can now enjoy access to various applications via the Ovi Store. The company has recently delivered a new software update for the N900 mobile phone, bringing the Ovi Store on all handsets out there, and now it reveals the first applications developed for the Maemo platform and available for download via the software portal.

“The Nokia N900 and Linux-based Maemo software platform attract a growing number of developers and brands signing on to create innovative applications that enrich the device experience. Fusing PC power, the internet, and the mobile phone together with an intuitive user interface, Maemo and the Nokia N900 prove an attractive avenue for creative collaboration and distribution. The applications allow users to customize and personalize the device further to meet their needs,” a recent post on Nokia Press Bulletin Board notes.

One of the new software solutions for the N900 comes from The Associated Press in the form of the award-winning multimedia news portal AP Mobile. The application, which is delivered in the form of a live widget, will offer access to international, national and local news, and will enable users to choose the categories in which they want to receive news, such as “Top News,” “Technology” or “Wacky.”

Another new application currently available for the Nokia N900 and the Maemo operating system is Qik, which comes from the leading live mobile video streaming platform Qik. The solution delivers a new UI and easy streaming of live videos on the handset. It can connect both via Wi-Fi and 3G, and one can easily stream videos captured with the 5-megapixel photo snapper with dual LED flash and Carl Zeiss Optics that N900 sports.

“Brands and developers of all sizes have begun developing for Maemo and plan to distribute through Ovi Store, Nokia’s one-stop shop for mobile media content. And with the new Nokia N900 software update (1.2009.44-1) issued yesterday, device owners now have direct access to the beta release of Ovi Store on Maemo. The beta release of Ovi Store for the Nokia N900 amplifies personalization on the device through the purchase and download of a range of applications, video, games, and more. A blinking icon on the status area notifies current Nokia N900 owners of the software update, which downloads over the Internet without the use of cables and the need to be tied to a PC,” Nokia also mentions.
