A few weeks ago, Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia announced officially that it would move towards Windows Phone 7 as its primary mobile operating system, and that it would leave the currently used Symbian and MeeGo behind.

Of course, that won't happen all of a sudden, and the company still has in store devices powered by these two mobile platforms.

Moreover, Nokia even committed to the launch of its first MeeGo-based smartphone during the ongoing year, and it seems that this device might land on shelves as the Nokia N950.

Of course, it would be the successor of the Maemo-based Nokia N900, but most previous reports on this suggested that it would be launched as the Nokia N9, becoming the next flagship Nokia smartphone.

Nokia N950 should land on shelves as the first, and, most probably, the only, MeeGo-powered smartphone from Nokia, but it remains to be seen when exactly that would happen.

What's certain, however, is that CTO Rich Green already confirmed the phone's existence, and that he also reiterated Nokia's plans to have the device available on the market before year's end (have a look at the video embedded at the bottom of this article, via Best Mobile Contracts to learn more).

As stated above, the MeeGo OS was expected to be released on the market on the high-end Nokia N9, but it seems that Nokia has either repurposed that device, or it actually transformed it into N950.

Just before Nokia and Microsoft went official with their plans to launch Nokia Windows Phones, some rumors on the N9 arriving on shelves with WP7 on board emerged, and it seems that they might actually pan out in the end.

As for the N950, the hardware specifications are a mystery at the moment, though Rich Green said that the company is working hard on delivering a “very elegant” device that would also sport an interesting UI.

The device would prove a great option for developers too, Nokia's official said, which sounded more like it would be a developer-oriented device, and not a mere user-friendly smartphone.

Hopefully, the Finnish phone maker would come up with more info on its plans for the MeeGo platform in the near future, and additional details on the Nokia N950 would also start to emerge, so keep an eye on this space for more.
