Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia announced more than two months ago the launch of its first handset powered by the Maemo 5 operating system, and failed to deliver it to the market until now, although a series of launch dates for the handheld came and gone. Officially, the high-end Maemo 5-powered device has started to ship today, and users in Europe, Middle East, Russia and North America are those who will soon be able to enjoy it.

There has been a lot of frustration among users due to the fact that Nokia delayed the launch of its N900 Internet Tablet, yet now enthusiasts can finally learn that they will grab the new device and benefit from its capabilities very soon. According to a recent post on Nokia Conversations, the handset will be priced at around 500 Euros SIM-free, yet it will also be available through various carriers, which means that users will have the possibility to enjoy it at subsidized prices.

The Nokia N900 has generated a lot of interest since its public launch in August, which has been reflected in the device preorders. What’s exciting is the Maemo software, which takes its cues from the desktop computer and offers a full browsing experience like no other handset. We believe the Nokia N900 will be a very compelling device for people who are passionate about technology,” stated Jose-Luis Martinez, Vice President for Nseries, Nokia.

It seems that the Maemo 5-based Nokia N900 has been developed so as to be compatible with almost all wireless networks around the world, though there are still some that do not see support at the moment. The new 3G SIM cards from 3 in the UK, Ireland, Sweden, Denmark and Austria are an example in this direction, though the issue should be fixed with a future software update.

When it comes to the capabilities of the new handset, there are not too many things that haven't been said. The Nokia N900 comes around with a 3.5-inch display that delivers a 480 x 800 pixel resolution, a 5-megapixel photo snapper with video recording, 32GB of internal memory and a microSD memory card for additional storage space, a wide range of connectivity options, and an ARM 600 MHz processor, capable of handling them all.
