And a quick look at Maemo 6 UI concept

Finnish mobile-phone maker Nokia announced a little more than a month ago the launch of its first handset powered by the Maemo 5 operating system, the Nokia N900, and it seems that the device will soon prove to be a great performer in about all available categories. Its Internet-browsing capabilities are great, the Maemo 5 OS seems quite appealing, and now it also shows that it can easily play 3D games.

The Maemo Summit is ongoing as we speak, and a video from the show is now available over the Internet, showing how the Nokia N900 can handle some 3D gaming (a Marble Madness-type game called Bounce Evolution has been used for the demonstration). While those who attended the show have had the pleasure of watching a live demonstration of the capability, you can take a look at the video below to see what 3D gaming on N900 is all about.

Moreover, you will also have the chance to enjoy a little demonstration of how the Maemo 5-powered device can play YouTube videos both in a browser and in a thumbnail on its interface. And that certainly seems to be a great thing for a mobile phone. The Maemo 5 OS seems to offer N900 the power to do a great deal of impressive stuff, that's for sure.

However, as many of you might already know, the work on Maemo won't stop here, and a future Maemo 6 release has been also said to surface in the not-so-far future. Since the Maemo Summit is the place where one can learn a few more details on what it is going to be like, a series of slides from the show has emerged on umpcportal, providing us with some info on what to expect from the future release of the platform.

Maemo 6 is supposedly expected to include multitouch support on capacitive displays, to be a DRM-ready OS, to include panning, to offer support for developers, to come with support for portrait and landscape, but to pack a lot of the already-existing core elements too. Take a look at the slides available from the conference to make an idea.
