As expected, Vodafone Australia has just announced the immediate availability of the PR1.2 software update for Nokia N9.

We reported yesterday that the carrier was currently testing Nokia Belle for N8 and C7, and had already approved updates for Nokia N9 and Lumia 800, which were waiting to be deployed by the handset manufacturer.

It looks like it didn’t take Nokia too long to start the rollout of the N9 major software update, as the carrier announced that starting April 10, the MeeGo PR1.2 was available for smartphones sold by Vodafone Australia.

PR1.2 is an important update for Nokia N9, which brings a slew of new features and lots of improvements that enhance the user experience.

The following areas have been tweaked to make things much smoother: Email, Camera, Gallery, Calendar, Music, Sharing, Facebook integration, Twitter integration, Maps and Drive, Email, Mail for Exchange Global Address Book Lookup and Email Threads Support.

The software update is about 300 MB in size, which is why we recommend users to download it via Wi-Fi connection or directly on their PCs.

The latter require users to download the Nokia Software Updater application in order to be able to update the Nokia N9.

Updating via firmware over the air is much easier and users don’t need to install any third-party apps. Those who have already been notified on the update can start downloading and installing it following the on-screen prompts.

Nokia N9 owners can also manually check for the PR1.2 update by simply going to Settings / Applications / Manage applications / Update Icon (lower right) / MeeGo Update.

It is recommended to make a backup of all sensitive data stored on the smartphone prior to the update. For more details on what’s included in the PR1.2 software upgrade head over to Vodafone’s blog site.
