knfb Reading Technology, Inc. and Nokia announced the availability of Nokia N82 with an integrated software for visually impaired users. The new N82 combines the features of a high-end cell phone with the functionality of a reading machine into a single Mobile Reading product that can be activated with the touch of a single phone button. The software's main idea is that users can take a photo of the print they want to read and the character recognition application in conjunction with the high quality text-to-speech function will read the print's content aloud and clear. Also, the software can display the document's text on the phone's screen, highlighting each word as it is spoken.

Nokia N82 packed with the knfb software can read almost any printed document, from book pages to letters, memos and bills. Furthermore, the software can read address labels, package information and instructions and can also easily recognize U.S. currency. It supports both US and UK English, allowing users to access all the phone's features: making and receiving phone calls, running accessible GPS programs, accessing the music player and so on.

knfb Reading Technology, Inc. chose Nokia N82 for its software first due to the handset's built-in 5 Megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, Auto focus and xenon flash, perfect for taking pictures of any document that visual impaired users would want to read. Also, the N82 is a highly-featured device that has about anything one would desire from a mobile phone.

The new Nokia N82 with the knfb software costs a bit over $2000, less than any other mobile reading device available on the market. It will work in the US on the AT&T or T-Mobile networks only, since the software requires the handset to be unlocked and these are the only two carriers with support for unlocked GSM phones. There are no details about the availability in other countries at the moment.
