Rumors have been going by that Nokia intends on buying Research in Motion (RIM), the main producer for the BlackBerry smartphone devices. This comes after a period when numerous such guesses have been made, some with a solid ground and others with no basis whatsoever.

The supposition that Nokia plans on buying Research in Motion has developed after a reputable electronics industry mag developed this theory and launched it out for everyone to take over. The exact statement that has been made is that "There were other rumors last week. Oracle was rumored to make a bid for SAP, Nokia would make a bid to buy Research in Motion, and Tokyo Electron Ltd. (TEL) would buy Lam Research Corp., according to SG Cowen Securities Inc. (New York)".

The source of this statement is anonymous, which greatly reduces its impact. Not completely, still, considering the fact that quite reputable magazines have considered this rumor worthy of mentioning. Still, if at least the industry mag had made this possibility a fact and not a rumor as it further went by, the matter might have been taken in consideration by even more people.

The news that Nokia intends on bidding for Research in Motion comes out of nowhere, as such possibilities have not been discussed before. Still, this makes it no less important for being taken into consideration, as if it were to come true, the implications would be of major importance.

By purchasing RIM, Nokia would manage to take over its primary competitor when it comes to smartphones. Even more, BlackBerry phone models are appreciated by a large number of users and might lead to a substantial profit growth for the company that might succeed to take them over from RIM. Whether it will be Nokia or anyone at all, we'll see.
