AT&T has just announced it has finally started the rollout of the highly anticipated Windows Phone 8.1 update for not one, but two smartphones: Nokia Lumia 520 and Nokia Lumia 925.

Nokia Lumia 925 was the first smartphone to receive the Windows Phone 8.1 update last month, but the rollout process is still staggered, so expect long delays in some countries.

It’s also worth mentioning that those who own carrier-branded Windows Phone handsets are likely to have to wait longer than those who have unlocked smartphones. Microsoft has already confirmed that the Windows Phone update will arrive at different times on compatible devices and that it’s mostly dependent on country and carrier.

Anyway, it appears that AT&T is one of the first carriers in the United States that makes the Windows Phone 8.1 update available for Nokia Lumia 520 and Nokia Lumia 925.

In order to download the latest Windows Phone update, make sure your phone’s battery is at least 50% charged. You can start downloading Windows Phone 8.1 by going to Settings Live Tile / Phone Update, and all you have to do next is simply follow the on-screen instructions.

Once the upgrading process is finished, the smartphone will reboot. Here are some of the most important new features you will get with Windows Phone 8.1:

“- Personalization – Live Tiles with multiple sizes, transparency, and color options let you pin apps, music and people to your Start Screen so you choose the information you want to be displayed in the way you want to see it.

- One Windows – With OneDrive, Skype, Office and Bing, the Windows experience is reinvented across all your screens—phones, tablets, PCs and Xbox—so you can shoot, share, work and play wherever you go.

- Xbox – With Xbox games, music and video in your pocket, you’ll have entertainment options on-the-go.

- Efficiency – Windows Phone is optimized to help you do more, with the new Word Flow keyboard, Action Center for managing notifications and quick actions, and a new suite of device and data management tools.”

Microsoft has confirmed that the first update for Windows Phone 8.1 will hit smartphones next week, but it will not be available for all devices at the same time.

As a matter of fact, it will only be available in a few countries and only for certain models, but the rollout will continue over the next couple of weeks in additional regions. Stay tuned for more info on the Windows Phone 8.1 GDR1 update.
