Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia reportedly ended plans to develop a new mobile operating system aimed specifically at low-end smartphones.

Supposedly called “Meltemi,” the platform was never officially confirmed, but it was supposed to help the company deliver more affordable smartphones than those running Android or Windows Phone today.

Yesterday, Nokia announced a significant shift in its organization, which included dropping a series of projects, and Meltemi is suggested to have been included among them.

As result of said changes, Nokia will give the pink slip to around 10,000 of its employees before the end of next year.

Moving forth, Nokia will focus on the development of Lumia devices, and it also aims at launching a series of more affordable such smartphones to better compete with Android at the low end of the market.
