Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia is getting ready to release a new software update for its Nokia N9 smartphone, one that will land on devices as firmware PR1.3.

The company is currently preparing the release of PR1.2 for the device. It does not have an exact release date for the upgrade, but suggests that next month could bring it to devices.

In a recent tweet, Sotiris Makrygiannis, director for applications for MeeGo at Nokia, mentioned “that extra day next month,” which made some conclude that February 29th could bring the new firmware to the table.

Moreover, he notes that, while the PR1.2 software is almost here, users should also look forward to getting a taste of the PR1.3 update for their devices.

This will be only a minor update for the MeeGo-powered Nokia N9 but will certainly have some appealing features to offer to users as well.

“1.2 at critical path, soon out. Say hello to 1.3 a small but still valuable update. All that and more from the #n9 team,” Sotiris Makrygiannis noted on Twitter.

The soon-to-be-here PR1.2 firmware is a feature-packed release, said to deliver a great deal of enhancements to Nokia N9 users.

There will be a number of more than 3,500 fixes and other improvements included in the software update.

Nokia is currently pushing the update to Nokia N950 smartphones, though only in beta. The update is available only for handsets that have been registered on its network as being developer devices, the company announced recently.

The beta testing period should be concluded next month, and the handset vendor appears set to release the update to commercially available Nokia N9 devices in late February.

Of course, nothing has been officially confirmed thus far, and things might turn out differently in the end. Stay tuned to learn some more details on this as they become available.
