For predictive text input

Straight from the Nokia Beta Labs comes yet another interesting application for the users of a Nokia smartphone, in the form of Nokia Custom Dictionary. What this application has been designed for seems to be something that many Nokia phone owners already required, namely the possibility to edit the words that a handset uses when it comes to text prediction.

“We are pleased to publish Nokia Custom Dictionary on Beta Labs to share with the community and gather feedback. We designed this experimental application to address the wish that many S60 users have had: to be able to edit the list of words used by the phone for text prediction and transfer it between phones,” Sethu Pillai, Nokia Custom Dictionary team, notes on the Nokia Beta Labs blog.

Not only does the new Nokia Custom Dictionary application offer users the possibility to edit the words a handset 'knows', but also enables them to import words from a text file. Basically, this offers anyone the possibility to teach the mobile phone words that can be used for predictive text, regardless whether they are commonly used or specific words for a “like-minded community.”

The actions that one can perform when using this application include: - View all the words in your custom dictionary - Add new words to it - Edit and Delete existing words - Export the dictionary as xml file - Import words from an xml file - Scan text files to import all the words - Transfer your dictionary to another phone

The Nokia Custom Dictionary has been designed so as to work on S60 3rd and 5th Edition devices, the developing team notes. The software solution is said to be fully functional on Nokia N97, Nokia N97 mini, Nokia E72, Nokia E75, Nokia E55, and Nokia E52, yet it seems that its functionality is limited on Nokia N96, Nokia N95, Nokia N95 8GB, Nokia N82, Nokia N79, Nokia N78, and other older phones.

Those who would like to learn additional details on the new application can either take a look at the video below, or head over to the Nokia Beta Labs website. The Nokia Custom Dictionary is available for download from Softpedia too, via this link.
