Nokia's engineers have just announced the release of a beta version of Nokia's Internet Radio service for Series 40 feature-phones, which was only available on smartphones. The application allows S40 phone users to access thousands of radio stations all over the world.

Unfortunately, as long as the application is in beta stages of development, only a few phones will be compatible, such as: Nokia X2 and Nokia X3 (-00, -01, and -02). Still, Nokia plans to add more devices on the compatibility list.

For those that have never experienced the application on a smartphone, Nokia Internet Radio app offers users the option to organize their favorite radio stations by genre, language, and region.

Thanks to the Search option, users will also be able to find exactly what they're looking for or discover something new, like a specific station.

Nokia Internet Radio supports hide and unhide functions, which means that you'll be able to run it in the background, while you're using the phone for something else.

Another interesting feature of the application is the possibility to purchase the music you hear on a supported radio station through the Ovi Music service.

If you own one of the compatible handsets, you can download the application here. Nokia officials also stated that the application will be published in Ovi Store, as soon as the beta trial is finished.

I also have some bad news for Nokia fans that own handsets with earlier versions of S40, like 3rd Edition.

The application will only support phones running S40 6th Edition because it heavily relies on some features/APIs that are only available in this UI version.

Further, Nokia does not have any plans to release Internet radio for earlier version of S40, so you should switch to a newer phone if you want to use the application.
