Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia really wants to get closer to its users, and has kicked off a new competition that enables it do so.
The company is calling for all those who would like to win a $10,000 prize to come up with a small melody they composed, which can be used as a Nokia ring tone on the company's future devices.
“For the first time ever, Nokia – together with AudioDraft – is asking you to create the next Nokia ring tone within select phones of Nokia’s 2012 product portfolio,” the company announced.
“Of course, the $10,000 prize is enough to make anybody want to compose their own small melody, however having your very own Nokia Tune heard over 1 billion times a day is an exciting enough reason in itself,” the company continues.
The winning melody will be included in the Ovi Store, so that users can download it on the over 100 million devices that can access the storefront at the moment.
Those who would like to participate should head over here to register. Also there, they can vote the available entries, thus helping the company decide what tone will be the winner.
All entries should be submitted before October 2, 2011, which means that people will have about four weeks at their disposal to come up with an original idea.
“The five most voted for entries will qualify automatically as finalists, where a panel of judges will pick further five entries for the finals and then make the deciding vote on who shall win the top prize of $10,000,” the company explains.
The handset vendor hopes to find the tone that will become as popular as some of the already available ring tones on Nokia devices. Have a look at the video below to learn more on this.
The mobile phone maker also notes that the five runner-ups will also have their Nokia Tune available for download from the Ovi Store, and that they will also be awarded $1,000 each.
Respected names in the audio branding industry will form the jury, Nokia explains: Kai Bronner, founder of Audio Branding Academy; Julian Treasure, author of ‘Sound Business’; Mark Dewings, head of Brand & Marketing Communications at SoundCloud; Nokia’s SVP of Design, Marko Ahtisaari; Super8 & Tab, worldwide renown DJ and electronic music production duo; Andrew Higgins from the AudioDraft community; and Tommi Koskinen, the Community Manager at AudioDraft.
First they are asking us to name their phones, then to come up with a great ring tone. Can't they do anything themselves? Sorry, but that sounds a bit lame and unimaginative marketing tactic... and 10 grands is nothing.
