Nokia N9, the one and only MeeGo-based smartphone launched by the Finnish company on the market has recently received a major software update that brings lots of new features and enhancements.

It’s not clear whether there will be more MeeGo devices released in the future, but Nokia officially stated that it wouldn’t build another smartphone powered by this mobile platform.

There has been much talk on the changes added with PR1.2 update for Nokia N9. Even though the company released an official changelog, there are so many improvements that some of these are worth an in-depth look.

As we already know, the N9 boasts an impressive 8-megapixel rear camera with Carl Zeiss optics, autofocus, dual-LED flash and HD (720p) video recording. However, N9 owners have been complaining on the quality of the pictures which could have been much better.

Nokia has been listening to N9 users’ feedback and has delivered major software improvements to the 8-megapixel camera, which is likely to make N9 owners more than happy.

The first important new features introduced for N9’s camera is called integrated automated face recognition and can be enabled within the Gallery.

It appears that once users take someone’s picture they will see a question mark on the person’s face. Simply press that sign to tag that person if it’s in the contact list. The real breakthrough is that the software actively learns your friends’ faces and will start suggesting their names the next time they get tagged.

As soon as PR1.2 update is installed, the phone’s camera will be added with a very useful feature called continuous shutter, allowing users to take perfect shots while taking photos of non-static subjects.

The camera is capable of taking a series of three frames per second at 5.5-megapixel with zero shutter lag. When the capture key is hold for a few seconds, the camera will take up to nine pictures in 3 seconds.

Nokia N9 users will also be able to edit videos captured with the smartphone, by cutting out parts of it or adding a certain tune. Nokia promises more upgrades for the N9’s camera so stay tuned for more updates on the subject.
