Last week, Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia brought its first Windows Phone handset to the market, namely the Nokia Lumia 800, and the company says that it has registered impressive sales so far.

Following the first day sales, the handset vendor claimed high demand for the new device, and it continues to do so, one week later.

Undoubtedly, the company does need Lumia 800 to be successful, as it is the first of a long series of Windows Phones, and things appear to be lining up in the right direction.

“Lumia 800 sales in the UK are off to an excellent start. Based on earliest data the sales start of the Lumia 800 is the best ever first week of Nokia smartphone sales in the UK in recent history,” Nokia told Softpedia in an official statement.

Nokia's sayings contradict a recent report from Forbes, which claims that the actual sales of Lumia 800 have been well below expectations.

The said article cites various analysts saying that Nokia's first Windows Phone did not manage to impress as much as originally estimated, and that the projected shipments target has been trimmed to less than one million devices.

Nokia, however, feels differently. The company told us that these early analyst reports actually contradicted the company's own data on the first week of sales in the UK.

“While it is not our policy to disclose individual product sales figures outside our quarterly financial results, we feel there has been premature sales analysis on the performance of the Lumia 800,” the company said.

“By our measures, we have gained significant smartphone sell-out share in the channels in which we are operating in the UK.”

Moreover, the company feels that its device was very well received by early adopters, and that they are very likely to recommend the device to more friends.

Last week, the new Nokia Lumia 800 smartphone also received the What Mobile Editor's Choice Award, bring crowned as the Mobile Phone of The Year at the What Mobile Awards 2011 in London.

“Based on Net Promoter Scores - which measure a consumer's willingness to recommend the product to a friend - the Lumia 800 has received the highest NPS score of any Nokia device we have launched in recent history in the UK,” Nokia says.

“Given our deliberate, sequenced roll-out across countries and with future launches ahead, this is a critical metric for long-term success.”

Before the end of the ongoing year, Nokia's first Windows Phones, the Lumia 800 and the Lumia 710, will be launched in less than a dozen countries around the world, but they should reach far more markets starting with the next year.

Also in 2012, the Finnish giant is expected to bring to the market more handsets powered by Microsoft's mobile OS, and also to ramp up volume production of these devices. Nokia's Windows Phones will eventually reach all markets around the globe.
