Nokia C7, one of the latest smartphones Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia launched on the market during the ongoing year, should get NFC functionality in early 2011 via a software update, Nokia's head of PR for France said recently.

The Nokia C7 was the second smartphone that the leading handset vendor announced for the market with the new Symbian^3 operating system on board, following the high-end Nokia N8, the first such smartphone.

According to a recent article on Teknologik, Xavier des Horts, Nokia's head of PR for France, said during an interview that Nokia C7's NFC (Near Field Communication) capabilities will be activated in early 2011, courtesy of a firmware update.

For those who might not know what NFC stands for, we should note that it is a short-range high frequency wireless communication technology through which devices can exchange data when at a distance of up to 10 centimeter (around 4 inches) from one another.

Those interested in learning more on what Xavier des Horts had to say should head over to Teknologik to take a look at the video interview they published, though they should know that it is in French.

The Nokia C7 was announced officially back in September, when Nokia unveiled two other Symbian^3-based smartphones, the Nokia C6-01 and the Nokia E7.

Previous reports on C7 pointed at the fact that it comes with NFC capabilities, but nothing was announced officially on the matter, nor were these features explained.

However, now we know that, starting with early 2011, the Nokia C7 smartphone should be able to offer its users more than what they have been asking for.

According to Xavier des Horts, as soon as the functionality is enabled, the handset should support applications like pairing with a headset, playing games and storing coupons.

What still has to be unveiled is when the payment applications would start arriving on Nokia C7, as nothing was detailed on this matter either. Des Horts says that Nokia will provide card emulation functions in the future.

According to Nokia, the C7 would be the only new smartphone from the company to arrive on shelves with NFC functionality on board, a recent article on NFC World reads.
