Finnish handset manufacturer Nokia has just announced the release of its mid-tier mobile phones, Nokia C2-01 and X2-01. While the former is a total surprise, the latter has been leaked at the beginning of November.

The handsets are targeting different users, but aim for the same goal, maximum functionality for the lowest price possible.

Nokia C2-01 targets those users who consider price as the most important factor when it comes to buying a phone, while the X2-01 is geared towards youth and has an emphasis on music.

For those that are clueless about Nokia's new device-naming policy, the letters indicate which product range the device belongs to, and the numbers give an indication of the feature set and price. For example, Nokia X2-00 will be cheaper than the X2-01, but will offer less features.

The new Nokia C2-01 is now the lowest priced 3G phone in Nokia's lineup, which comes in a candy bar form factor. The handset runs on the classic Series 40 platform and sports a 3.2-megapixel camera.

It has a small 2-inch display, music player, FM radio, Bluetooth connectivity and microSD card slot for memory expansion (up to 16GB). This is the sequel to Nokia C2-00, which is a dual-SIM entry-level featurephone.

The C2-01 is slated for a Q1 2011 release and the price will vary according to local taxes and operator subsidies, but is expected to be around €70.

Nokia X2-01 is mainly targeting social networking fans looking for fast communication on the go.

The phone comes in a bar form factor and features a full QWERTY keypad. As an Xseries device, the handset also includes exceptional music-oriented features. Thus, users will have one click access to music, the media player, FM radio and the Ovi Music service.

In terms of specs, Nokia X2-01 comes with a 2.4-inch QVGA screen and a VGA camera on the back. It also packs a microSD card slot for memory expansion (up to 8GB), as well as GPRS and EDGE connectivity.

The Nokia X2-01 is expected to be available by the end of the year for around €80.
