Nokia has just announced that it plans to renew the chipset strategy they have been using until now. The Finnish company will introduce a licensing and multisourcing model meant to bring the company to a new competitive level on the handset production market.

Nokia already holds a privileged place in the mobile phone production, as this is the top company in the world. Still, it has become quite important for them to develop best results in their chipsets too. The company intends to include protocol software and related digital design for WCDMA/GSM and then license it to its chipset manufacturers. Further on, they will use it in the chipsets they develop and produce for Nokia and not only.

"Companies in this industry need to focus on areas where they can add value and partner with others where it makes sense. We believe that our renewed strategy will allow us to concentrate on developing core chipset technologies, while increasing our R&D efficiencies and improving our agility in a fast-moving marketplace", observed Niklas Savander, Executive Vice President, Nokia Technology Platforms. For this reason, "This is a pragmatic move in the face of an increasingly complex technology environment", he further added.

The licensing and multisourcing strategy will make it possible for Nokia to increase the number of chipset suppliers and bring its support to external innovation of a wide range of telecom products. For this to be possible, they have already started working with four chipset suppliers. Each of them will be used for different areas of development, as to bring Nokia the most specialized support.

Among the companies working with the Finnish company we could mention Texas Instruments, for all protocols, Broadcom, for EDGE, Infineon Technologies for GSM and STMicroelectronics for 3G. These efforts are meant to help Nokia in its work with modern technology, including software and power internet services.
