We have reported earlier today that WhatsApp Messenger is now available for Nokia Asha 501, as the Finnish handset maker promised last month.

However, the popular instant messenger application can only be downloaded after Asha 501 receives the upcoming software update, which is slated to arrive later this week.

According to Nokia, the latest software update is meant to bring the Asha 501 to the latest version that comes with the recently announced Asha 500, 502 and 503.

The devices will come pre-loaded with WhatsApp Messenger application, along with all the new features and improvements that are now expected to arrive on the Nokia Asha 501 as well.

Aside from bringing WhatsApp Messenger to Nokia Asha 501 users, the upcoming update will add lots of new features and improvements.

For example, Nokia Asha 501 users will be able to take advantage of their phone’s camera simply by swiping up on the Lock screen, and then capture an image just by touching anywhere on the camera screen.

The latest update also comes with improved privacy features and many personalization options. Lots of services have been added as well, including Odnoklassniki, Sina Weibo, and Renren.

Those who use these services will receive live updates on Fastlane when there is new activity to check out. The new software brings an API for Voice over IP, which means that users will be able to make voice calls over data connection using third-party apps like Nimbuzz.

Last but not least, Nokia Asha 501 will receive Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync support, so those depending on emails will be pleased to know that they will now receive their messages the second they're sent.

Nokia has confirmed that the new update will be available later this week, so those who wish to check if their devices are eligible should go to Settings / Phone update and Update if the new software shows up on their Asha 501 handsets.
