Nokia finds new ways for reducing the energy waste

Nokia gets more and more concerned when it comes to energy saving. Taking this into consideration, the company has developed strategies that will considerably reduce the energy wasted by the mobile phones that are left to charge more than necessary.

Forgetting to unplug their cell phones left to charge is a quite frequent and understandable habit among users. Still, the energy that is wasted this way could actually be used to provide enough power for 85,000 homes during an entire year. Nokia seems to consider it a shame to have all this energy loss for no reason whatsoever.

For these reasons, Nokia has introduced a special alerting system in its new Nokia 1200, Nokia 1208 and Nokia 1650 phones that have been recently released. The system works quite easy and it is hoped to prove its efficiency. Every time the phone's battery has charged, an alert announces the user and therefore he immediately has to unplug the phone.

"Around two-thirds of the energy used by a mobile phone is lost when it is unplugged after charging but the charger itself is left in a live socket. We want to reduce this waste and are working on reducing to an absolute minimum the amount of energy our chargers use. The new alerts also play an important role, encouraging people to help us in this goal by unplugging their chargers", said Kirsi Sormunen, Vice-President of Environmental Affairs at Nokia.

Nokia is the first mobile phone producer to introduce such a system. This comes after receiving an Energy Star award from the Environmental Protection Agency in the US for the efficiency of their chargers. Nokia received appreciation for using up to 70 percent less energy than the Energy Star requirement. In the future, Nokia intends to reduce the chargers' electricity consumption with even more 50 percent by 2010.
