The smartphone won’t be carried by any mobile operator

It appears that the history repeats itself as Nokia confirmed that its monster camera phone Nokia 808 PureView wouldn’t be officially launched in North America. Just like the MeeGo-based N9, the 808 PureView smartphone will not be offered by any carriers in the United States or Canada.

The confirmation comes via Nokia developer site where the Finnish company states that Nokia 808 PureView will be released globally, excluding North America.

Obviously, this does not mean that customers living in North America or Canada won’t be able to purchase the smartphone.

Nokia N9 was available through multiple retailers in both countries, so it won’t come as a surprise if the Nokia 808 PureView is offered unlocked and SIM free via authorized sellers.

For the time being, Nokia did not offer any explanations to why the phone won’t be officially launched in North America, but rumor has it that carriers might not be willing to subsidize this device.

On the other hand, Nokia’s SVP, Jo Harlowe confirmed that the PureView technology would soon be ported on Windows Phone devices, which means North Americans might still get a camera phone to feature this kind of imaging technology by the end of the year.

Nokia is probably not sure that a Symbian Belle device might be able to penetrate the North American smartphone market the way it should, so it decided to rely on other regions where its Symbian devices are still popular.

According to the latest hearsay, Nokia 808 PureView will be initially released in Russia, followed soon by other European countries. Furthermore, it appears that Russia will be Nokia 808 PureView’s main target, just like the N9.

The 808 PureView smartphone runs Nokia Belle operating system with Feature Pack 1. The latest Belle update will be pushed to Nokia 603, 700 and 710 as well, sometime in the following months.
