New Symbian S60 clamshell

In case you are wondering what the upcoming Nokia handset that AT&T is preparing to offer is, it is Nokia 6650. Of course, you might be aware that a phone with exactly the same name has been around for more than 6 years, but we are now talking about a brand new Nokia 6650 – a clamshell, more exactly.

The future availability of the 6650 via AT&T is quite a surprise. This is because, back in January 2008, when Nokia introduced the phone, the Finnish giant said that it would be released exclusively via T-Mobile International. In the meantime, T-Mo's exclusivity seems to have vanished, and now the big blue North American carrier (AT&T) can also offer the handset to its customers.

Surprises aside, it's surely a good thing that US users will get to have the new 6650 (if they decide to buy one, of course). The phone is packed with an array of pretty nice features, including Symbian S60 3rd Edition, a 2.2 inch TFT internal display with 240 x 320 pixels and 16 million colors, built-in GPS to work with AT&T Navigator, quad-band GSM connectivity and HSDPA (for data transfer speeds of up to 3.6 Mbps), Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, external music keys, Music player and FM radio, Mobile TV capabilities, a 2 Megapixel camera with flash and video, pre-installed games, USB modem, 40MB of internal memory and hot-swappable microSD card slot (for an extra of up to 8GB).

The new 6650 weighs 3.95 ounces (112 grams) and, when not flipped, it measures 3.93 x 1.86 x 0.64 inches (99 x 47 x 16 millimeters). The handset's battery is a 1500 mAh one capable of providing up to 4 hours of talk-time or up to 14.5 days of stand-by time.

For the moment, AT&T has not given any info on the release date of the 6650. However, since the handset appears on Nokia's official website, with the AT&T logo on it, it will probably hit the shelves in the next few months.

As for the phone's price, US users might want to know that, via T-Mobile UK, the 6650 is offered even for free if bought with a contract agreement and a data plan of at least 30 GBP ($55) per month. Thus, the new Nokia shouldn't be too pricey on AT&T.
