Nokia 6500 slide Review

Buggy little slider

Fully aware that its own developed Symbian operating system is not a perfect one, Nokia offers users devices with its newly launched S40 5th Edition. The latter is a much more user friendly and it seems that also 'lacks' the bugs and glitches that have been so much present in Nokia's Symbian OS. Normally, that should translate into a more stable and speedy functionality with no more lockups and freezes. Lately, it 'rained' with Nokia S40 handsets, and some of these were really huge market successes (see Nokia 6300). The two Nokia 6500 versions – slide and classic – even if they don't look similar and have different specs, still feature the same S40 5th Edition user interface. Despite the fact that Nokia is still the number one handset manufacturer, it still has to work a little on developing more stable software for its devices.

Announced in May 2007 together with its Classic twin, Nokia 6500 Slide has been launched on the market in September 2007. As a mid-level phone, the handset can be bought for only $450 USD without a contract.

Design

Nokia 6500 slide is far from being flawless in terms of design. Unfortunately, there are things that you are able to discover only after you buy and use the device. Better read further and understand what you should and should not expect from this slider. Keep your money or go buy some other device if you're looking for of the features that this handset misses.
Review imageReview imageReview imageReview imageReview image

The first thing that you'll notice the moment you get your hands on a Nokia 6500 slide is its weight. The slider is 'unpredictably' heavy, especially because it has been covered by a metal case. If you don't like heavy mobile phones, then this little slider is not for you. Moreover, the handset measures 96.5 x 46.5 x 16.4 mm and weighs around 125 grams (battery included). The phone looks very small, common in sleekness, but as I have stated above, it's impossibly heavy, so you should be really worried of the pocket you insert it in.
Review imageReview imageReview imageReview imageReview image

The metallic case is obviously harder to scratch than the common plastic that is heavily used for mid-level handsets. Anyway, the device looks like it was chopped from a big chunk of metal. I have discovered that the upside part of the slider, the one with the screen on it, is slightly wider than the one from the bottom. This is only obvious on the right part of the slider, and the reason is unknown. Another downside of the slider is the fact that it features most of the ports (charger, headset, microUSB) on the top side rather than on the bottom. Furthermore, the internal antenna of the phone has been placed on the bottom part, so if you're used to keep your phone from the bottom you'll experience big problems with the signal reception. Otherwise Nokia kept it straight as usual, placing the volume key and the camera key on the right side of the slider, while the left side is 'clean' of external buttons or keys. Above the display – hard to notice – the secondary camera used for video calls and the light sensor have been placed.
Review imageReview imageReview imageReview image

Turning the slider upside down will reveal a 3.2 Megapixel camera with 2 flash LED's and an external speaker. The back cover of the phone is also made of stainless steel, but sadly the internal closing mechanism is made of plastic. Furthermore, after a short use I noticed that the back cover started to juggle a little bit, which translates in lack of solidity. The phone might look compact and solid for one who didn't have the chance to use it for 1 day, but it seemed pretty fragile to me. There's also a very dangerous designing fault, which permits the slider to seriously scratch the first 3 upper keys (1, 2, 3). Every time you slide the phone, either up or down, that will leave some marks on these keys and there's nothing you can do.
Review imageReview image

Anyway, there are some good things about it, like the very responsive keypad, including the D-pad which makes navigating the menus a breeze. The backlighting also is worth mentioning. Overall, the phone looks very appealing, but there are some small details that make it 'annoying' to use.

Display and Camera

Nokia 6500 slide features the same 2.2'' TFT display as its twin brother, Nokia 6500 classic. The screen supports 16 Million colors and a standard resolution of 240 x 320 pixels. Even if it didn't scored too much on different benchmarks, the screen is simply breathtaking.
Review imageReview image

Review imageReview image

Images are displayed smooth and vivid, making the use of the slider a real pleasure. Apart from the fact that the screen is visible in strong sunlight, this may be one piece of the phone that sucks the most energy from the battery than any other, but it is definitely worth it. Notice the small rubber band placed at the base of the display? Well, that's one good thing implemented by Nokia, which protects the screen from grease and/or fingerprints. Usually, when you want to slide up the phone, it is very difficult to avoid touching the display, especially on a such a small phone. The rubber band will not allow users to grease the screen and will make the sliding up action more smoothly.

One of the strong points of the slider is definitely the 3.2 Megapixel camera, which features autofocus Carl Zeiss lenses. The control interface of the camera doesn't have too many settings, so everything is kept simple and straightforward.
Review imageReview imageReview image

I suggest you to always use the maximum resolution possible (1536 x 2048 pixels) for the best result when taking snapshots. Other options of the camera include: White balance (Daylight, Tungsten, Fluorescent and Horizon), Effects (Greyscale, Sepia and Negative) and Image quality (High, Normal and Basic). You can also digitally zoom in, but that will considerably lower the quality of the pictures – I suggest you never use it. I couldn't squeeze less than 5 seconds when accessing the camera, which means that you won't be able to capture pictures too fast. Overall, the camera's making a good impression, all pictures are looking great regardless of the light conditions.
Review imageReview imageReview imageReview image

Still, even with 2 LED's flash I wouldn't try to take night pictures unless the subject of the pictures is very close. Those who intend to use the camera of the phone to record clips should know that even if it can capture movies at a high resolution (640 x 480 pixels at 15fps), files are saved in .3gp format and not in .MPEG4 format as Nokia advertise it. The length of the clips is only limited by the storage space available. Movies quality is mediocre if you use the basic settings of the camera, but very low when trying to zoom in.
Review imageReview imageReview imageReview imageReview image

Menu and Software

If you're a mobile freak and a Nokia fan you are probably fed up by S40 user interface. In case you're neither of the two you will love the menus and the user friendly interface. Maybe "boring" it's too harsh, but I think a little bit of changing doesn't hurt, especially that this is the 5th Edition.
Review imageReview imageReview imageReview image

Those who are using Nokia's Series 40 5th Edition for the first time should know that the UI enables users to experience streaming videos, image rendering, mobile 3D graphics and scalable 2D Vector graphics. The Series 40 5th Edition also supports the latest version of Adobe's Flash Lite 2.1, the interoperable platform that enables the accelerated development and delivery of rich graphical mobile content, and includes audio file playback and streaming capabilities that provide audio and music enhancements to both mobile gaming and multimedia experience. In addition, Series 40 5th Edition also enables Bluetooth and IrDA (Infrared) connectivity and synchronization capabilities. The platform's broad support for SMS text messaging and multi-media messaging (MMS) includes true interoperability for a variety of MMS content formats and classes.
Review imageReview imageReview imageReview imageReview image

You can also find other useful applications such as: Yahoo! Go, Alarm clock, Calendar, To-do list, Notes, Calculator, Countdown timer, World Clock and Stopwatch. The menu is fully customizable and you can designate any MP3, MIDI or AAC file as ringtone. Nokia's integrated browser doesn't change also, but you might want to use Opera Mini for faster and smoother browsing. Nothing new in terms of interface, but there are some bugs that I could discover pretty fast. I believe the fact that the keypad doesn't automatically lock after you slide down the phone is the most annoying one. Still, it's good that you have the option to set the timer for automatically locking the keypad. The only way that the keypad is locking automatically is when you are called by someone. After you finish your conversation and slide down the handset you'll have a nice surprise: the auto key lock really functions. Unfortunately, this didn't happen when I called someone, so if you can find a Java application that will correct this, you’d better grab it.
Review imageReview imageReview imageReview imageReview image

Another bothering bug is the slight lag from the time of answering a call and the moment you actually hear the other person. I have set the handset to automatically answer the phone the moment I slide it up, but to my surprise it took around 2 seconds to actually do that. There has been talk on various specialized forums that the 4.81 firmware version will correct this serious bug, but that didn't happened to my phone, so we're stuck with it. Apart from these bugs, the phone is definitely fast and easy to handle.

Communications

Just like its Classic brother, Nokia 6500 slide features 3G technology (UMTS 850 / 2100), GPRS (Class 11, 53.6 kbps), EDGE (Class 10, 236.8 kbps) and HSCSD (57.6 kbit/s). The phone is fully packed with connectivity features, that way users will be able to opt for any of it, either it is cheaper or more expensive. Moreover, all these are working at the highest standard as you can see from the screenshots below.
Review imageReview image

The slider is also compatible with Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP technology and features microUSB, all of which worked like a charm. Bluetooth connectivity was also a nice surprise as it scored pretty high on both sending and receiving data files (143 KB/s sending and 107 KB/s receiving).
Review imageReview image

In terms of messaging, the phone accepts standard text messages, MMS, flash and sound messages, as well as emails. The message client has changed into a dedicated one (no longer Java supported), it works with POP3, SMTP, and IMAP4 protocols and supports more than one email accounts.
Yahoo!Go is also present, so you can check you email box, but you can also take advantage of some of the cool features that the service made available by Yahoo! has to offer.
Review imageReview image

The quadband (GSM 850 / GSM 900 / GSM 1800 / GSM 1900) network compatible slider has a mediocre GSM signal reception, but very poor 3G signal reception. The sound is unexpectedly poor in quality, but at least it's pretty loud. Nevertheless, the vibration is somewhat mediocre in intensity and cannot be set to higher levels. That will surely make you miss a lot of calls if you set the phone on Silent.

Processor and Memory

By the look of it, Nokia 6500 slide features an ARM9 family processor running at speeds up to 170 MHz. This is the same CPU used by its Nokia 6500 Classic brother and is more than enough to run any Java application you need. The phone doesn't feature any multitask capabilities, but there's no lags at all when running multiple applications or when browsing the menus.
Review imageReview image

The slider handset embeds 20 MB user free internal memory, but that can easily be expanded through the microSD slot card. The latter can be found under the metallic cover on the back of the phone, right near the battery. Fortunately, I see no reason to pull out the battery when you want to insert a microSD memory card. The phone comes with a small memory card (256 MB or 512 MB – depending on the location) in the sale package, but that can be replaced with a 4GB one (successfully tested).
Review imageReview image

Multimedia

Even if most mid-level handsets delivered by Nokia come with mediocre headsets (Nokia HS-47), this time it's the phone that makes the difference. Featuring the latest music player embedded by Nokia in its Prism models, Nokia 6500 slide offers a wide range of settings. Despite the fact that this is not a music dedicated phone, it still impresses through the quality of the sound, although it features such mediocre headphones.
Review imageReview imageReview imageReview image

Different settings like Equalizer and Stereo widening have been included to improve the music experience of the user. The music player recognizes multiple formats such as: AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, MP3, MP4, WMA, AMR-NB, Mobile XMF, SP-MIDI, MIDI Tones (64-tone poly) and True tones. The external speaker on the back of the phone is one of the loudest embedded in a Nokia handset, but lack of any traces of bass sound might lower the quality of the tunes you're listening.
Review imageReview imageReview imageReview image

There's also a stereo FM radio with Visual radio and RDS, which performs pretty good in terms of sound and reception of the signal. The video player is compatible with 3GP and MPEG-4 file formats and can be set to full screen anytime. Those eager to watch their captured movies or pictures will be happy to find that the sales package contains a special TV-Out cable.

Battery

The 900 mAh Li-Polymer battery is worse than we expected. Even if it has an officially stated life expectancy of 310 hours in standby and 6 hours in talk time mode, in truth it failed to attain more than half of that. This makes the phone less desirable and considerably shortens the time of use.
Review imageReview image

Impressions

At first glance, Nokia 6500 slide seems more solidly built than its Classic version, but in the end, it proves to be just a mid-level phone. Carrying it with you might attract some looks, but no more than those of fashionistas. You can choose look over functionality, but in this case neither is that good. Overall, the slider didn't impress me much, and I'm pretty sure I wouldn't buy one after I’ve discovered so many of its bugs.

The Good

Perhaps the best thing about Nokia 6500 slide is software related. Nokia S40 5th Edition proves to be the best user-friendly interface integrated in a mobile phone. Add to it one of the best displays made by Nokia and you got yourself a possible masterpiece. I should also mention the camera of the phone, which is definitely above the average and the 3G technology. Unfortunately, this is where it stops, as everything else about the phone is mediocre or worse.

The Bad

Some flaws in design, as well as few annoying software-related bugs made the phone "unbearable" to use. Pity that even if discovered these bugs haven't been corrected yet. There's also the battery, which in terms of performance can be easily categorized as mediocre. I have found few very strong points onto this slider, and it is sad that everything else pretty much sucks.

Comment #1.3 by: Peter on 24 Sep 2009, 05:50 GMT

LOL to use the front camera just make a video call :)

It's a crappy camera I wouldn't wanna use it for anything else, just use the proper 3.2mp on the back for happy snaps!

Comment #2 by: jackie on 31 Jan 2008, 14:18 GMT reply to this comment

Have just got one, great for me, its photo capabilities are great, just like a camera with a large lcd screen
BUT cannot find in instructions about "the front camera", what is it for, and how do you work it, why have one????
thanks

Comment #2.1 by: Icon on 01 Feb 2008, 07:34 GMT

Secondary camera is for video-calls.

Comment #3 by: Landlord on 19 Feb 2008, 22:08 GMT reply to this comment

Having read all the reviews, I just picked one up - and it's terrific. True, there is a small delay as you slide up to answer a call, and the battery life isn't great if you use 3G a lot. Otherwise, it's great. So thanks, Softpedia, for such a balanced and informative review - I'll certainly be taking your comments into consideration in the future!

Comment #4 by: a 6500 slide user on 22 Feb 2008, 17:36 GMT reply to this comment

Had this phone as an upgrade on 3 for just over 2 weeks, and thing has busted already. when switching it on, 'nokia' shows on display, then screen goes blank, and shows nothing at all. after a couple of seconds, switches itself off again. also found during use, that it freezes, and hangs when trying to access menus, or 'backing up' a page. locks up regular too, or doesnt want to access some applications. Have been a nokia user for about 10 years, and stick to what i know, but am having my doubts over this recent arrival

Comment #5 by: Jason Hamilton on 29 Feb 2008, 18:48 GMT reply to this comment

Is der anyway u can use d secondary camera ??
I no its suppose to be for video-calls

I wont to use it to take pics

Comment #5.1 by: Sannice on 02 Apr 2008, 06:15 GMT

I have checked all the possible way to use the front camera edi and I do not think it can be used for photo taking :-(

Comment #5.2 by: Peter on 24 Sep 2009, 05:54 GMT

Seriously you have a 3.2MP Carl Zeiss Camera with a flash on the back which is just as good as any Compact Digital Camera on the market.. why would you want to use the inferior front camera for anything other than video calls? It is not a good quality camera!

Comment #6 by: Jun on 03 Mar 2008, 11:18 GMT reply to this comment

Aesthetically, a nice looking slim phone, though, nokia has some way to go to match samsung, in looks.
For a multimedia phone using Nokia's S40 ED 5. operating system, I'd say the best buy cos the S60 symbian based Operating systems used largely in the N Series Nokia phones are a complete pain in the a**, (frustratingly slow).
For a 3.2 Mpix Camera Phone and Mp3/FM player with 4 GB Max storage capacity, i'd say nice configuration (way up there).
Battery life is decent during normal data/voice usage. Should comfortably serve u 2 days between each charging cycle. (Not the best option for heavy voice/data users/music listeners).

The truly ugly side of Nokia 6500 Slide would be its transceiver capability, which could have been worked on a little better by Nokia.
If the mode selected is automatic 3G or GSM, you'd find the phone exhibiting extremely poor reception capabilities. And If you were to manually set the phone to GSM only mode, even then, if the phone is not in a network coverage area that is strong, it struggles to stay online. Fortunately, havent experienced call drops so far.
It appears, the phone just goes on its own trip searching for a network every once in a while.
Multimedia apart, the basic function of a mobile phone should be served well, especially for the amount one pays for the phone.

Had Nokia worked on its transceiever capabilities a little better, would've rated it 8.5 on 10. In its current state 7/10.

Comment #8 by: sandy on 16 Apr 2008, 04:05 GMT reply to this comment

hi i am interested in this phone here but i am not sure should i purchase the nokia 5610 xpress music or this 6500 slide as the functions are almost the same. may i noe which phone is of a better quality and better functions?

Comment #8.1 by: Icon on 19 May 2008, 10:55 GMT

It depends on what you expect from your phone. Design of both 5610 XpressMusic and 6500 slide is cool, so it's a matter of taste. Functions may seem the same, but 5610 XpressMusic also offers great music quality, besides the 3.15 MP camera. As soon as we receive a test handset for Nokia 5610 XpressMusic we will write a review, so you'll be able to compare both devices.

Comment #9 by: Prashanth on 04 May 2008, 10:47 GMT reply to this comment

is the silver phone same as the all black version?

Comment #9.1 by: Icon on 19 May 2008, 10:47 GMT

Yes, they both have the same technical features.

Comment #10 by: Ax on 18 May 2008, 17:18 GMT reply to this comment

I have 3 days of standby time with heavy use (gsm only, Firmware 6.60) I find the phone and especially the design very impressive. After 3 weeks of usage still no scratches on the keys. Maybe i have a newer build ?

Comment #10.1 by: Icon on 19 May 2008, 11:04 GMT

I sincerely believe that you were lucky. It's a 25% chance that you get a Nokia 6500 slide that doesn't have the 'keypad scratch' problem.

Comment #11 by: RabidPablo on 25 May 2008, 08:32 GMT reply to this comment

This review is titled "Buggy little slider". You also talk of "some bugs that I could discover pretty fast" and "so many .... bugs".

But what are they? It appears you mention only one -- the short delay when answering calls. Your other comment on this topic,
the fact that the keypad doesn't automatically lock after you slide down the phone, is scarcely a bug. I much prefer it this way, and indeed (on my phone anyway) you are given the option of locking the phone as you close the slider, by pressing the main selection key.

You use the word "bug" nine times in this review, giving a vague impression of dire faults which you don't actualy detail. Perhaps you could list a few.

Comment #11.1 by: Icon on 26 May 2008, 09:44 GMT

I don't mind listing a few problems that I had with Nokia's 6500 slide. Sorry for not mentioning in detail these but there are so many and I didn't want people think that I have something against Nokia:)
1. Problems connecting the phone with the PC via PC Suite (this might be corrected with the latest version of PC Suite)
2. Frequent freezes, especially when I'm missing calls and want to check the missed number.
3. The keypad doesn't automatically lock when you close the phone (yes I know you like it, but most users don't).
4. Memory card isn't always recognized, but when it works if you choose a ringtone on the memory card it automatically reverts to Nokia default tone (this might be a hardware issue with memory cards).
5. Misses GSM signal in areas that usually have strong signal reception.
6. Choosing themes that are found on the MicroSD card is a bad move as the phone automatically changes it to another one found on the phone's memory (just like ringtones; can be solved by putting themes on phone's memory, but it's still a bug)
7. Once or twice per week (depends on how often you use it) it restarts by itself for no apparent reason.
8. Video playback problems with 25fps and higher movies. They all look crappy, but it helps lowering the bitrate. Strange that its own movies are played correctly:)
9. Camera startup is very SLOW.
So here's your 9 bugs:)

Some of these software related problems might have been corrected in the latest firmware (v6.60), but some aren't. It can even happen that while most will be repaired, but others will appear. Personally I consider Nokia 6500 slide a fiasco, but fans of the brand may think otherwise.

Hi all,
1st i wanna mention that i received this phone as a gift from my father, so if i paid for it this $450, i would regret much.
but now i think its price goes down.
anyway i maintained the mobile software version(initial one v3.8) coz the new version v6.6. is not safe as my feedback.
the phone battery life SHOCKED me , the freezing but not that much (by the way all Nokia freeze from 3310 model till the N versions) so its normal.
also this 6500 doesn't support 3rd parties applications at all, i can't play any video clip i put on it....it SUCKS
finally the Nokia PC and Update softwares don't work with Vista...VVVVVVV sucks.
but as comparing with other Nokia , its a good phone,
but u know whats the best mobiles phone,
beleve me its ALCATEL , but now it has been sold to korean firm so i dunno whats their performance now.
i think u must hold ur money till Alcatel purshase back its devision, and don't ask me why i have this Nokia, i told u before ITS A GIFT.

Comment #13 by: nitin on 09 Jul 2008, 10:20 GMT reply to this comment

a few from my side
1. the calendar application does not have work week no. now that is pretty much necassary if you intend to use it for scheduling your meetings and work 'organizer'
2. the wallpaper gets frozen and the phone refuses to go in screen saver mode of clock display only. after struggling a lot fianlly the problem was rectified only when i switched off- on the phone
3. I tried editing my contact list using PCsuite shipped along with the phone, but the contact list that it showed had only the names and no other information , not even phone no, was visible for any contact. I tried 6300 on the same PCsuite and it showed all data related to every contact without any hassle.
4. finally I do not understand why change to micro usb when standard usb ports are equally good. 6300 usb port is compatible with camera/handcam cables which are easily available if you are at a friends place. but if you want to share something with this phone you need to caryy the special cable with you always.

overall i like the phone, but is disturbed by these issue. and yes, my keypad is getting scratched!!

Now on my third Nokia in 5 weeks the contract I am in says, I cannot change the phone for one that is reliable, Ive been seriously let down by this phone first one the screen kept breaking up, was exchanged after 20 days, 16 days later the second phone froze on me with no visabillity to the screen what so ever and eventually nothing, which was on the first day of my holiday, so no holiday snaps, and no phone. Would certainly not recomend this phone to anyone. It has cost me time out of work, and hours of negotiation with my service provider, and to totally have no faith in Nokia.

Great phone - no probs and love it. BUT... upgrade to software v 08.30 and can no longer access internet. WHY?

Comment #21 by: Shane McEneaney on 22 Sep 2008, 08:24 GMT reply to this comment

I have been buying Nokia mobile phones for 10 years. This one is the worst yet. I always perceived that Nokia was a safe buy. The screen went after 6 weeks. When I sent it back to the phone company for a repair under warranty they returned it with a "warranty void" statement. Apparently water got in. I used the phone once in the rain.

Avoid!

Pros: Looks nice.

Cons: Will break really soon after buying. I am not the only one. Read the reviews. The pictures were better on my old 2 Megapixel.

I can only view 5 seconds of video clip copied to the phone even though the whole file consists of about a minutes worth of music. Any ideas?

I have answered to that question:
"Secondary camera is for video-calls only. You cannot take pictures with it."

I got one of these last week as an insurance replacement for my SE W810i, which was lost or stolen. So far, I'm fairly happy with the phone and have had none of the problems that others are complaining about. I suspect I got a new revision though which solves the problem with the battery compartment sensor. Also, I'm running the 6.60 firmware, which seems to be pretty stable.

Had I paid full price for this phone ($700 New Zealand Dollars at the time of this writing) I would have been less than satisfied with it. It's not that there's anything particularly wrong it, I just don't feel there's enough to it to command such a high price. As it was I only paid $150 for it though - the insurance excess charge.

The insurance settlement covered a new crystal case, a new leather carrying case, a Nokia WH-700 stereo headset (I didn't like the packaged ones, plus they weren't comparable to the SE HPM-70's I lost) and a 2GB MicroSD card. Hell, after everything was purchased, I even had enough left over from the settlement to buy an extra 4GB MicroSD card! Maybe I should lose cell phones every other day! LOL :)

The media player is pretty good and the sound quality is great - it's comparable to the Walkman series phones. However, I do suggest ditching the packaged stereo headset as it's not that good. Right now I'm using a Sony MDR-7506 for my listening needs until the Nokia WH-700 I ordered arrives.

The camera is pretty good and the dual led flash is a lot brighter than I thought it would be. It's a shame they didn't include a lens cover though.

Texting on this phone is a little weird as it's not the same as I'm used to on the SE W810i. I'm sure I'll get used to it though.

It's a sharp looking phone and people do take note of this when I'm using it. That's not why I bought it. However, I do find it to be an added bonus.

The battery life is not as good as my W810's was. SE takes the lead there. However, it's not that bad. I can get two full days of very heavy use of it before I have to recharge. It helps to turn off unneeded features though. For example, I turned off the 3G, as I don't video call or browse the web much with the phone. And, Bluetooth I only turn on for small files transfers. If I'm transferring over CD rips I use the USB cable. It's much faster than Bluetooth anyway.

I'd suggest ditching the Nokia PC Suite software. It's really crap and doesn't maintain a USB or Bluetooth connection well at all. For syncing and contact management stuff I use OxyCube from Oxygen Software.

Anyway, I hope this helps someone with their purchase decision.

Junk.

It crashes, it freezes regularly.
It takes anything from 2-5 minutes after turning it on to read contacts off the sim card and messages in the inbox.
Switches itself off randomly, particularly during calls.
Hasn't read memory card for about 2 months now.
Battery life is shockingly bad.
Also scratch resistance is the biggest piece of false advertising ever.
Get massive lags randomly when doing things on the phone.

probably you didn't pay your mobile bills? that is why it got cut off?

and like i've said, probably.

Mate, you probably need to update your firmware to v 8.30. I started having similar problems about a week after I wrote my initial review. However, once I updated my firmware, the problems disappeared.

As for the memory card problem: there's a little pin on the underside of the battery cover. If you slide something under it, and raise it up about a millimeter, the card reading problem will probably disappear.

after 2 months of using my fone, i already have difficulty it taking some pic. i would use the memory card as the storage of camera pics. then when i use the camera and take some pics, sometimes, it would STANDBY or OPERATION FAILED, cant save image. sumthing like that. the worst is, it says that memory card is nopt formatted, format it anyway? or sometimes, it would suddenly change the storage memory from memory card ( my settings) to phone memory. and it sucks coz i have the largest size for my image so that it would look clearer and my fone memory could only store up to 23 images. huhu help please!

I pay six times the price of a cheap phone just to get a piece of crap that freezes every time I try to write a txt. Its about to get the bounce test to see how high I can bounce it off a concrete floor. Shame on Nokia for releasing such crap.

This phone worked great for me at first but now i cannot even charge it unless the battery is fully drained. However when it does, battery life is less than a day. From fully charged it skips 1/2 and goes directly to about 1/8 battery life then dies. I'm on my third replacement battery now and the problem remains the same.

Our company gave out this phone. At the time, the phone's performance was okay. And then it just got worse and worse. The phone's not even 1.5 years old and it's starting to be very very annoying. The screen suddenly goes all white and then hangs and then reboots on its own (this happens in the middle of texting or just browsing through the menu). It doesn't always recognize the external memory card, which is the larger percentage of the phone's storage memory. I use this memory when storing pictures and music. So, in the middle of viewing pictures, chances are the screen blacks out and returns to the standby screen. Or in the middle of listening to your playlist, the music suddenly stops and the media player will start searching for music files again. And again. And again. And again. I knew of this because while I was browsing through the menu folders, the icon for the memory card appears then disappears then appears then disappears... Or while browsing through the folders IN the memory card, I'm suddenly taken back to the Gallery folder and watch the memory card icon appear and disappear again. Then of course, there are times when everything goes well. It's extremely frustrating if you wish to maximize the features of this phone. But if you just want it for the calls and texting, then go ahead and buy it.
