The new handset presented by Nokia in Amsterdam

At the annual Nokia World conference held in Amsterdam, the Finnish communication giant announced a set of initiatives towards the environmental issues. The main attraction of the event has been the announcement of a new handset - Nokia 3110 Evolve. This is the first mobile device with bio-covers made from more than 50% renewable material. The device is presented in a small package made of 60% recycled content and it comes with Nokia's most energy efficient charger yet, using 94% less energy than the Energy Star requirements.

While Nokia 3110 Evolve is in no way more technologically advanced than its Classic predecessor, it represents the latest in a series of environmental initiatives from the Finnish company. In terms of design there's nothing in particular that will catch your eye. Well, I believe that's the main reason that it is called Classic after all.

The triband (GSM900 / GSM1800 / GSM1900) network compatible handset features a small TFT display that supports 256k colors (128 x 160 pixel resolution). Furthermore, the 1.3 Megapixel camera on the back of the handset may seem too little for these days' users, but at least you can get some pictures with it. There's only 9 MB internal memory that the owner can use, but you can take advantage of the microSD slot card, which is upgradable up to 2 GB. The phone also features GPRS, EDGE and Bluetooth 2.0 technologies, as well as USB connectivity for PC synchronization.

For those who do not know or don't remember, I should mention that Nokia was the first mobile phone manufacturer to put alerts into its devices to encourage people to unplug their chargers. The power that could be saved globally by all Nokia phone users unplugging their chargers when no longer needed is equivalent to enough energy to power 100,000 average-size European homes. Furthermore, in February 2006, Nokia also introduced new compact packaging that reduced materials used by 54%, a move that by the end of this year will have resulted in 5,000 fewer trucks needed to distribute products, reducing fuel consumption and carbon emissions, and savings of EUR 100 million.

The phone will be available in Q1 2008, but there's no information about its price. I think we should expect a medium price as it keeps the same specs as the mid-level 3110 Classic model or even a lower cost just to encourage the sales of an ecological handset.
