The smartphone packs a quad-core MediaTek processor

Nokia has already stated that it has no intentions of entering the smartphone market yet, but that doesn't mean that won't happen in the future. According to an agreement signed with Microsoft, the Finnish company is forbidden from launching a smartphone until late 2015.

But Nokia has some aces under its sleeve and the launch of its N1 Android tablet was one of them. Another one could be an affordable smartphone, but that shouldn't happen anytime soon.

However, it looks like the Finnish company is already testing an Android smartphone, if we are to believe the latest benchmarks that have just emerged online.

Spotted by NokiaPowerUser, the so-called Nokia 1100 has nothing to do with the very old feature phone launched in 2003. Instead, it's an Android smartphone that has just appeared on Geekbench with this name.

We're going to file this under rumors, but it shouldn't really be surprising that Nokia is testing an Android smartphone. So, according to this benchmark, the Nokia 1100 is a smartphone powered by Android 5.0 Lollipop operating system.

A mid-range smartphone that might not be launched under Nokia's brand

In addition, the smartphone is equipped with a quad-core MediaTek MT6582 processor, clocked at 1.3GHz. There's something curios here as the motherboard mentioned is called Gionee, which is a Chinese OEM.

That might be an indication that Nokia is possibly designing a Gionee affordable Android smartphone which, obviously, will be launched under a different name.

Nokia 1100 may only pack 512MB of RAM, but that would be kind of too low for a smartphone with quad-core processor and Android 5.0 Lollipop operating system.

Given the fact that we know it will be equipped with a MediaTek MT6582 chipset, we might be looking at an HD (720p) display and an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera.

Anyway, it's a bit early to talk about specs sheet, especially that we're still in the dark on Nokia's plans for the smartphone market.
